What is a Burrowing Owl?
A Burrowing Owl is a cute creature that lives within burrows; thus the name Burrowing Owls. With brown spotted feathers and long legs, there is no mistaking when you see a Burrowing Owl. They've large yellow eyes that are beautiful to see.
When Burrowing Owls are hunting for food, they often will sit perched on their perch, waiting for food. They love insects so they will swoop and catch the insect, in flight. They also love to eat mice and moles. The Burrowing Owl is one of the smallest owls living in North America. Because they are so small, they can often become in danger because of developments such as buildings. They do not care where they build there structure as long as there is sand and a burrow, they will create a home. They love treeless areas but as long as there is a dirt or sandy area, they are happy.
Burrowing Owls are active during the day and can often be seen sitting on their mini perch. They will bob their head if they are in distress. If you are approaching a Burrowing Owl, and see this, you know to back away slowly. Give them space and they will be fine.

Because they are often threatened, in Cape Coral, they are protected species. This insures that no matter where they create a home, they are protected. This means that their burrows, the eggs and burrowing owls themselves are protected.
