My favorite thing we did was go on a swamp tour. The swamp tour company we went with was Louisiana Tour Company. You can choose between a covered slow boat or an air boat tour. We opted for the slow boat because our friends had a baby with them and also because we felt that the slow boat ride would allow us to take in more of the wild life and beauty of the swamp.
During the swamp tour the guide informed us that in the fall and winter months a lot of the alligators would be hibernating, however sometimes they may appear on a bank or rock to soak up the sunshine. Thankfully, the day we went was nice and sunny in the mid 70's so we did get to see a couple small alligators on the banks of the swamp.
Cruising through the canals on the slow boat was indeed the way to go. We were allowed to get up and move around the boat so we could take pictures and see what was on the opposite side of the boat.
As we explored, the guide explained a little about the history around the sights, including an Indian burial ground, and we were able to see a couple different kinds of birds standing stock still against the backdrop of beautiful greenery. My husband and I have always wanted to see Spanish moss and in the swamps there is plenty of it to see, it appears almost strategically draped across the trees.
The absolute best part of this tour was when we got to hold a baby alligator. The guide passed the little gator, who was about a year old, around and some people on the tour even gave it a kiss. Now, how many people can say they have held a baby alligator?
The swamp tour boat was covered and had plastic windows which were removed due to the wonderful weather, but in the case of rain could be put in place so a tour can be enjoyed rain or shine.
The tours can range anywhere from twenty nine dollars to forty nine dollars per person depending on if you drive yourself or use the shuttle. Be sure to call ahead or have a concierge at your hotel make a reservation for you to ensure your spot. There are many companies in New Orleans who offer swamp tours, but I'm glad we went with the Louisiana Tour Company, they gave us a great tour of the Louisiana swamp.
