The Swatch makers conceived the idea of the Swatch to overcome and regain market share lost by Swiss manufacturers to the Japanese makers of the Seiko watch. Launched in 1983, the Swiss put their minds to incorporate their well-renowned quality movement and high-tech design into the watch. Today, the Swatch is the highest selling watch worldwide.

Many people like think me collecting is all about emotional appeal (in addition to the financial factors). Some of the very early Swatches models have sold for thousands. Once you've had one, you'll always look upon it with the nostalgia and respect for the attention to quality, no matter the price level. And let's face it. There are collectors for almost anything that man has ever invented and Swatch watches are just one of those items. Plus, Swatches are very affordable and give a fun sort of adventurous feeling. Plus, Swatch is always coming out with more new styles. Some of the most notable collectibles encompass a range of about 5 styles. These include the:

Originals are for the first time collectors and cover a number of colors and shapes;

Irony metal watches are very sporty and deep sea water resistant. They were popular with scuba divers.

Skin watch is for collectors into fabric and bold fashion. In its heyday, the Swatch was hailed as the world's thinnest chromo. It was so thin and lightweight that it felt that nothing was worn on the skin at all.

Bijoux is Swatch's diamond jewelry line of eye popping bling;

FlikFlak Swatch watches for children. This watch was specially engineered to help kids learn to tell time

Other Swatch potential collectibles launched in the early 2000's include the

Red and burgundy vintage Chiccirchi with Roosters at the pivotal quarter hour positions;

Also onboard is the Internet access watch, called the net.invader watch. This watch was designed to work with a mouse pad, which somehow allows users to access email and the websites.

Swatch also has watches that allow access to sporting and cultural events. Swatch Access timepieces have a microchip that can store information and an inbuilt honing antenna that communicates the data to scanners.

The watches are found at ski resorts worldwide, allowing skiers instant access to lifts as well as provide a way to pay for items like coffee with their timepieces.

The Swatch watch portfolio also has well- known higher-end watches including the Omega, Blancpain and Breguet lines.
