Sweat Lodge

Sweat Lodge

Brazen beckons of charcoal heaps,
crackle darting flames in parting leaps.
Seekers speak on mystery's learned,
in churning cauldrons of histories spurned.

Bitter brews bite, in ayahuasca rites swallows,
glimpses spew of worlds veiled, soul follows.
Lurching creeps to indigo inky entrance door,
enveloped in heat, marrow deep igniting core.

Is this the portal for sacred vision quests,
or just a reminder, we are mortal guests.

The recent deaths in an Arizona sweat lodge.

We live in a time of tremendous resources for knowledge. Some learning has to be done through experience, but maintain your own authority to make decisions that are appropriate for your own safety. I can see myself attending something like that seminar, would I have insisted on leaving the sweat lodge? How about you...

"What if you're practicing wrong? Then you get very good at doing something wrong. If we don't get good instruction, then we don't notice when it's a little out of round. Surrender yourself to your teacher. That's doesn't mean you turn over your life to the teacher - you don't want a guru. You have to keep the autonomy within yourself. You are finally the ultimate authority on your own practice." Quote from George Leonard's Mastery. http://www.gaia.com/quotes/George_Leonard

Well, I'm back. I think the quotation at the end is excellent advice.

I have left a sweat lodge early. I can tell when it's too much. However, I think I understand what might have happened. When the leader insists you stay to burn out impurities and it's someone you admire, it looks like common sense gets over-ridden. A very sad state of affairs. Great poem btw.
