Dog sweatshirts actually serve a very important function, as they help to keep a dog warm. While it's certainly true that dogs have fur, it may not be enough to stay comfortable on those drizzly, cold days of winter. This is especially true with older, possibly arthritic dogs, and they would benefit greatly from a cozy sweatshirt to keep their bones warm. In addition, smaller dogs, and thin-haired dogs can really have a difficult time staying warm in rainy, cold air. The idea that dogs, whether small, medium, or large are immune to the cold, is a false notion.
Every dog is an individual, and your dog's reaction to dressing up will vary. However, the reaction will typically be positive if the sweatshirt is comfortable, and fits as it should. Obviously, it should only be worn when the temperature necessitates the need for that type of attire. A well-fitting, comfortable dog sweatshirt will probably be one of the most versatile garments in your dog's wardrobe. You can find them in practically ever size, in Burberry plaid, patterns, and of course, the more traditional solid colors.
You're going to find the widest selection of dog apparel by searching on the net. Many brick and mortar pet shops do not carry dog sweatshirts for larger dogs, and don't stock the variety of merchandise you'll find in the online dog clothing boutiques. They'll have every imaginable color and design, with matching collars and leashes. Before you take your first online shopping trip, be prepared by measuring your dog's length of back, starting from the neck, all the way to the base of the tail. Take measurements of the abdomen, chest area, and neck with a cloth measuring tape as well. If you are just beginning to build your dog's wardrobe, I would suggest starting out with a practical sweatshirt designed for every day use. Nothing too flashy, something in a solid plain color that looks comfortable. Next time it's cool outside, slip it on your dog before you take him for a walk, and see how he reacts.
Once your dog becomes accustomed to wearing it, he'll probably want you to put it on every time you take him out for a walk. At that point, you may want to expand your dogs wardrobe. Booties are another practical item to consider, as they protect your dog's paws from hot concrete in the summer, and freezing snow that could cause frostbite in the winter. Of course, you might later consider t-shirts, rain coats, dresses, and even a colorful scarf. With this much fun, you might end up with an extensive stylish wardrobe for poochy in no time at all.
