Sweden Set to Be First Country to Allow Gay Marriage

Lori Leidig
Sweden has long been one of the free-est and most progressive countries in the world. Having allowed gay civil unions since 1995, it now looks like the call to strike any gender reference in marriage laws is going to pass and go into effect in 2008. This will make Sweden the first country to allow the gay community to actually marry and have completely equal rights alongside heterosexual couples. Numerous church officials in Sweden are supporting this move and have stated they are eager to open their doors to gay church weddings.

It is about time someone stepped up to the proverbial plate. I am proud that it is my adopted country that is making the move to do so.

The Lutheran Church, which up until the year 2000 was part of the state, has in fact been blessing gay civil unions for the past year. This move has been a major score for the fight to allow gay & lesbians to actually marry. Civil Unions are nice, but the name implies a prejudice still.

When this marriage law is changed to include all gender combinations, Civil Unions will remain an option to everybody. Some people do see the word 'marriage' as church-related and prefer to avoid anything with religious overtones. For them the option of a Civil Union will remain. Straight couples have long had both options. Now all couples will.

Seven political parties are represented in the Swedish Government. Six of those parties are in favor of this change. Oddly enough, it is the Christian Democrats who are the sore thumb to the whole thing... going against their own church. Even the Conservative Moderate party is mostly in favor of the change, which is the party one would think would be against it. Swedish Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt is very much for gay marriage, which is part of the reason this is certain to go through with little problem.

The Social Democrats have long been for this move, and they are by far the largest party. The Green party? All for it. Liberal party? Of course. The Center party, which used to go by the Agrarian party, are for it. Even the Left party (Communist party) is for it. So what is the problem with the Christian Democrats when even many Church leaders are embracing it? Come on guys...

Once this passes, and it will pass... make no mistake... it will be interesting to see how fast the rest of the world follows suit. I am proud to live in Sweden, and this move to recognize gay & lesbian marriage is just one of many reasons why.

Check your facts - there are a lot of countries where gay marriage is perfectly legal. Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Spain...

  • Your name 12/21/2008

Um...hate to burst the bubble but the Netherlands in 2991 allowed full equal gay marriage. Heck even south Africa beat Sweden to the punch passing this in 2996! Then of course Canada, etc...How about Sweden will be the 7th country to pass full same sex marriage laws? Nice story you just need to fact check yourself.

Rose said: "Can't say I'm in favor of any law which goes against God's laws, but that's the kind of world we live in. I guess I'll go find the tree because I know those kind of comments always bring on the lynch mob. Happens every time."

I say: The "lynch mob" mentality is generally a majority group mentality consisting of people who choose not to think for themselves. I doubt the type of people who think progressively and "outside the box" about topics such as gay marriage are going to "bring on the lynch mob." Great article, Dr. Devience!

Great article. I'd like to see gay marriage recognized here in the U.S., but I'm afraid that may not happen.
