From "Native Talk" Poetry Collection

Teri Bethel
Big brown an' juicy
Dilly stack high on da box.
Beggin' me ta buy dem
So I pull ova'- I had ta stop.

I eye dem for a l'il bit-
Pick 'em up an' feel da skin,
Sniff dem wit my big broad nose
Chile, I knew I was in.

"How much dey cost, Ms. Wendor?"
I ask wit my teet smilin' big.
I was lookin' fer a discount
But she'ne smile, she jes pat her wig.

"I runnin' a special on dilly t'day,
Course you know my prices is right.
You could have 6 big dilly for dolla',
Or half a dozen fa d'same price."

Well addin' was never my strong point,
But I figure it was a good deal.
I tought I better eat it anyhow,
Since my finga burse tru da peel.

I set next ta da box grinnin'
Oh mercy, dem dilly look good.
I file dem down one at a time,
Eatin' as much as I could.

"Ms. Wender, dese sweet I tellin' you,
I'ne neva had none like dis before."
I loose my belt a l'il bit,
So I could make room for more.

"I see you eatin' my dilly, Suh,
Das tree dollas wort you done eat.
You bes make haste and pay me,
Cause I doesn't works ta see your teet."

"Ms. Wender, why you talkin' like dat?
I soon give you your money,
Jus dat ma hands l'il wet, Sweety-
When dey dry I ga pay you, honey."

"Look, I'ne need no long story,
All I know is 18 dilly gone.
You set down and pack yersef
Like wind pullin' tru a storm."

"Ms. Wender, you know I ga pay you.
I brings tourists here erry day.
Give me l'il time, I has da change
Ta pay ya jes as you say."

"Mista, which pocket it in?
Show me, Suh, I'll get it out.
I only wan' take wats rightfully mine,
Cuz you know Ms. Wender could count."

"What you sayin', Ms. Wender?
I tought me an' you was tight,
You talkin' bout goin' in man pocket.
Sis, you mussee lookin' fa fight!"

"Mista, I tired of your long talk,
Truth is, I relly don' care-
If wet hands is what bodderin' you
Dry dem on yer nappy hair!"

I count ma cerns an' set dem down,
Do' couple was stick togedder-
But dine bodder Ms. Wender none,
She jes say "tanks my bredder."

I jump in ma bus, wallet l'il light,
All I wanted was a dilly or two.
But erry time I pass her stall
Ms. Wender sellin' sometin' new.
