Sweet Maple Syrup

April Higney
The heat of summer, draining,

she leaves footsteps in red clay,

like a desert yet enriched in greenery,

wishing for rain to fall upon this tropical beauty display.

She closes her eyes and imagines,

her memorable places in the cooler air,

in silence shivering in the snowfall,

spending her winter there.

The brisk taste of autumn,

a palette to suffice her taste between the days of hot and cold,

sweet maple syrup, ice cream, the smiles,

laughter in the leaves, cool calm colors, yet vibrant to behold.

Remembered summers, of splashing in the lakes,

calmer streams, canoes, fishermen baiting their hook,

sitting upon a rock, between the water and a tree,

shady comfort whilst reading quietly, a book.

The southern landscape still has its rewards,

but she holds the lands of home in the north fresh in her mind,

cooling her thoughts, in the hot sun,

opening a window to the world left behind.

The heat of summer, she quenches her thirst in memory,

leaving footsteps in red clay,

sweet maple syrup, ice cream, the smiles,

wishing for rain to fall upon this tropical beauty display.
