Sweet Momma J

An Interview

Louisa Burgess
Momma J, AC Content Producer
Date of Interview: September 18, 2008
I know you will grow to enjoy this writer as I have. She can be very hard on herself, but I've been following her work from early on and she just keeps getting better. I love her range of topics and willingness to tackle something new. Momma J is a very fitting name for this sweet, devoted mother of two.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself. The name you use here on AC and why, where you live, what you do for a living, do you have a hobby, a family?

Momma: My name is Jennifer, I use Momma J as a pen name. We recently moved from Florida to Alabama. The people are great here but my heart is in Florida.I am a happily married stayed at home mom of a boy and girl. I love warmth and being near the water.

Q: What is your idea of a great vacation?
Momma:
Anything that involves playing with my children. I like to go to the playgrounds and beaches and be able to relax.

Q:What kind of movies do you enjoy and what is your favorite movie?
Momma:
I love romantic movies, not the kind with sex every two seconds but the kind that are dramatic and you are anticipating the first kiss or the love scene.

Q: Would you call yourself an outdoor or indoor type of person? Explain.
Momma: I am an indoor person. I hate bugs! I grew up in Virginia, spent time in the garden, had a horse until my dad started raising cows, and went camping a lot! Spiders are the worst when you are trying to work outside because they surprise you. You're planting something or getting a saddle down and you aren't expecting a spider to run out from under a leaf or a saddle. YUCK!

Q: How long have you been writing?
Momma: I've been writing all my life, never professionally.

Q: If you had a Bucket List, what would be the top three things you wanted to do before you die?
Momma: I'm not really adventurous and I usually just go and do what I want. The only trip I regret not taking was I wanted to go to Coney Island and I kept putting it off.

Q: Do you have a favorite author (not an AC Producer)?
Momma: Stephen King is an author I have really loved but I love reading, my favorites are the Reader Digest Books.

Q: What do you like about writing for Associated Content?
Momma: I like being able to easily access and read other producers work. I like being able to write what I want knowing someone else is reading it and will give me a different perspective on how to look at something or maybe I helped them somehow.

Q: Do you publish your work anywhere else?
Momma: I did publish somewhere else once or twice but I didn't like the way the site was set up and it was too hard to navigate through.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration for topics?
Momma: Life gives me inspiration. Especially my children.

Q: Do you have a favorite genre to work in?
Momma: I have a broad range and not any particular favorites. I love financials, been in accounting most of my life, I love satire and opinion pieces because there is too many funny things in life to focus on all the bad in a negative way, and I love how-to's probably because not only do I like helping people but I love telling people what to do.LOL I do a lot of home repairs and car maintenance probably because my brother got me into construction and my husband's hobby and life work revolves around cars. I love fashion, not that I dress well but I love looking at other people's styles. I also like writing about parenting and children.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone getting started with freelance writing?
Momma: Write, write, and rewrite. Do what you like and know and it comes naturally. When you force topics or try writing just for money if you don't go back over your articles they come across as you not caring. I don't say this as an experienced writer I am saying this as a reader.

Q: Which piece of work here on Associated Content do you think is an example of your best work? Please provide the link.
Momma: This might not be an example of my best work but this is a poem I wrote for someone dear, my grandfather. He is an inspiration to me and I am probably his biggest fan. He is someone that grew and changed with the times while inspiring us to be good and honest. I called my poem THE WAY because he worked for Virginia DOT and he encouraged us to go where we wanted not worrying about getting lost because all roads go somewhere.
