Sweet Tea and Sanctuary

Old Woman

Orchiolum
The rocker, the porch
homemade, home cooked
the scent long passed
a memory seared.

Blue mountains now cradle
this ancestral child
from misted mourn
through starlit night.

For Grandma Burke, an incredible woman who gifted my memory with sweet tea and sanctuary amid the peace of Kentucky mountains. She understood the varied meanings of family and love and so many things. She welcomed all my friends, and laughed when I called her old woman.

I think of my grandmother whenever I read the poem which follows:

"Long Years apart-can make no
Breach a second cannot fill-
The absence of the witch does not
Invalidate the spell-

The embers of a Thousand Years
Uncovered by the hand
That fondled them when they were fire
Will stir and understand."

Beautiful memory. I, too, have kin folk in the Kentucky mountains. I think it is one of God's greatest works of art. Your Grandmother sounds lovely.
