Swim with the Sharks at Walt Disney World

Amanda M. Rose
When spending a week visiting Florida, many guests are apprehensive about swimming in the ocean because of sharks that are known to haunt the waters along the coast.Since Jaws came out in the late 70's the ocean waters have never been quite the same to people swimming in the water.

Walt Disney World has taken this fear, along with the fascination that surrounds sharks and has created an amazing experience, known as Shark Reef. If you love Shark Week on discovery channel, or you are into adventure, this shark experience is for you.

Walt Disney World Typhoon Lagoon features a large tank that guests are allowed to jump in and scuba dive across. The tank features a glorious coral reef, leopard and bonnet head sharks, stingrays and schools of beautiful tropical fish.

Guests are sent in to the tank to start their scuba diving exploration in groups of 15 - 20. Guests are not permitted to kick their legs while crossing the tank, and are encouraged to use life jackets if they are not a strong swimmer. Other equipment that is supplied is snorkel and mask, free of charge.Guests of Typhoon Lagoon Shark Reef who are not quite up for the adventure of swimming with the sharks or are travelling with a smaller child for the week, but would like to view them are invited to view the sharks from a sunken tanker. This allows guests to view the coral reef and all the sea life, including the sharks through portholes in the tanker.

For guests that would like a greater experience under the sea, Supplied Air Snorkeling systems are available for rent at Hammer Head Fred's Dive.

This experience is perfect for pre-teens, teens and adults. An amazing adventure for Shark Week!
