You will likely have little trouble convincing your kids to give swimming lessons in the winter a try. While to the adult mind this is really a disorganized approach to life, doing summer things in the winter, for kids it can be exhilarating. As much as they may enjoy winter sports, it's not always possible to access optimum conditions to participate. Sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate. Even in good winter weather, after a few weeks of climbing up and down the sledding hill you may be surprised how much enthusiasm your kids will show for the chance to do some swimming, indoors. Because swimming during winter has to be done indoors, at most clubs swim space is available and classes are forming throughout the winter months. You just need to plan ahead through your local sports club or YMCA.
One of the benefits of swimming lessons for kids in the winter is that it allows kids a chance for some low impact aerobic exercise. This is another way of saying that taking your kids to swimming lessons in winter may be a wonderful way to allow them to exercise and relax at the same time. The buoyancy factor of swimming can really be therapeutic for all ages, including kids. Without taking a muscle inventory, common sense seems to indicate that swimming will also require your kids to use a whole different muscle set than say skiing. In addition, most swim programs include some free swim time which allows young people to just relax and enjoy themselves in the water, a wonderful experience for children who are stressed at school or at home.
A second benefit of taking kids to swimming lessons in the winter is that you are likely to find that winter lessons are given to far fewer kids than summer classes and as a result pressure on the individual swimmer to learn speedily may be less. Our experience was that instructors seemed to have more time and patience to work slowly especially with reluctant swimmers which makes all the difference in the world. During the summer classes often more timid swimmer can get lost in the shuffle. By giving a little extra of your time to take your child to swimming lessons in winter you may find you have given him or her the kind of setting most conducive to learning at their own pace.
Swimming lessons in the winter can really break up the monotony of what can be the most monotonous season of the year. For kids it has the allure of the unexpected and the excitement of doing something that not everyone else is doing. For young people swimming lessons in the winter is the equivalent of ice skating in the summer both are attractive because they are so contrary to the norm. Parents often discover that for this very reason, children who fuss over summertime swim lessons are far more willing to take the same lessons in the winter with much less coaxing from parents.
Finally swimming lesson for kids in the winter has a wonderful side effect. If your child attends swim lessons with some regularity and is well taught then chances are he or she will have more chance to actually enjoy the sport in the summer. Instead of seeing summer as a training time for young swimmers, children who have taken swimming lessons in the winter can look forward to a summer spent swimming not just learning how. If you have vacation plans for the summer that include a beach, lake or hotel pool your child will be well prepared to go and fully enjoy the experience.
Call it crazy if you must, but don't let that keep you from planning swimming lessons for your kids in winter.
