As a lifelong emetophobe I want to put all of those out there are suffering from emet ease. Yes, nausea and vomiting can occur with H1N1, but the Swine Flu is not a gastrointestinal disorder. it is much like the traditional flu which mainly affects the respiratory system. Symptoms are fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing.
That being said we need to take the Swine Flu or H1N1 seriously. Chances are if you have emetophobia you already wash your hands a ridiculous number of times, cover your mouth, and make sure to use napkins or tissues when touching door handles. Do you need to walk around America wearing a mask. No because most masks will not protect you from the virus. Your chances right now of being infected in a public place are pretty darn slim anyway.
I am personally about as paranoid as they come when it comes to illness. i personally think I keep the makers of Purell in business, but the Swine Flu is the last thing I am worried about. I am a little more concerned with the number of people I have talked to who have norovirus symptoms then Swine Flu.
One thing we emetophobes do have to be grateful for is the fact that H1N1 or Swine Flu is bringing out the importance of hygiene. The president even recommended increased hand-washing in his first 100 days speech. I have never agreed more with the man then that moment. People are taking precautions and are staying quarantined when they have a possible case.
I hope that the Swine flu goes the way of flu season soon, and we can all sleep a little better at night, but until then, if you are worried, carry around a bottle of Purrell and don't kiss any pigs.
