I have a friend who had a whole room in her basement, cement I might add, from wall to ceiling full of dried foods, and every kind of thing you can possibly imagine stockpiled because of the fear over Y2K. When it was over and it all fizzled out and no one had anything happen at all, she was left with lots of stuff that she needed to get rid of. Of course there was a lot of stuff that came in handy that she had in reserve. But then there was dried soup that she gave me that when I opened it, moths flew out and got started in my pantry.
We see masked people on the news protecting themselves from this dire disease. Record sightings of Swine Flu victims are being kept track of. Just about every state now has gleefully announced the arrival of Swine Flu. We now have a victim in Notre Dame! Did she die? No actually she wasn't even that ill. I am not making light of this. I am just trying to put it in perspective. I was watching Extra this afternoon. I was all curled up on the couch feeling very, very sorry for myself. I was prepping for a colonoscopy in the morning.
What if I got the Swine Flu? Maybe that is why I really feel so awful? Maybe it isn't all the prep stuff that is making me feel like shit, pardon the pun. If I have the Swine Flu will I still be able to go get this done in the morning or will I have to go through this horror again later? Would I have to lie in misery again, flipping through Rachel Ray and the offensive Burger King Square Pants commercial, and yet again one more Ponderosa commercial as I salivated, feeling horribly sorry for myself?
The good news is according to Extra, that 750 people die each day from flu. If you really want to call that good news. The interesting thing is that is not Swine Flu. That is just regular run of the mill flu that is around all the time. Most of the people who get Swine Flu according to Extra don't even get that sick. I don't know if it is true or not, but with my usual pessimistic attitude I will cling to that little hope and thank God when tomorrow is over, assuming I live that is and don't have colon cancer.

Post a CommentI was around for the first swine flu. I wouldn't take the shot. My argument was that if everyone else takes the shot, I won't get the flu. A friend took it and got Guillain-Barre Syndrome from it. He was scared so bad! He was paralyzed from the neck down for a while, and his hair turned gray. It took him a year before he was walking again, and he was not the same guy for a few years after that. He's OK now. Anyway, I do know that something quite possibly will come along sometime. I'm not forgetting the Spanish Flu (I wrote an article on that one). But I am seeing that this swine flu is likely going to pan out about as much as the last swine flu did.
I am so sick of hearing about the"swine flue" I could scream! I feel awful for those affected, but there are 35,000+ people dying of seasonal flu every year (not just infected, DEAD), and that never makes the news. I understand this is a different strain but sheesh...if there's no vaccine, and they don't want mildly sick people running to the ER, why the hell is it on the news every day? What purpose is served? There's nothing we can do other than watch for symptoms and stay away from sick people...isn't that what we should all already know?? What are we really being distracted from ;)
I hope it doesn't become like the boy who cried wolf. One day there will actually be a deadly pandemic.
Cough, Cough...don't worry I covered my mouth (sorry I needed be funny but probably failed)
I never want to hear "Swine Flu" again. Jeanne's right -- they're blowing it way out of proportion! (And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the Burger King - Square Pants -- and butts -- ads! I'll never go there again. Not that I went there before...) And I'm glad to know that your colonoscopy went well and you don't have cancer! Hooray! Your article was straight to the point about hyping up this flu; the hysteria about it is much worse than the illness!
I am so sick of the swine flu... Honestly, I think they are just blowing this way out of proportion.
I Think you are correct. There seems to be a lot of panic about what appears to be a very mild strain of the flu. Many people have said this is less deadly that the normal type A flu that goes around each year. Great article.
They just closed a school around the corner from us. Now the kids will be home for 11 days and what will parents do with the very young ones?
