Recent History:
The Swine Flu also known as Mexican Flu was first detected in the US and then later traced to have been originated in Mexico is the condition in humans after being infected by the new strain of the A (H1N1) influenza virus. The new strain is actually a reassortment of four known strains and hence more resistant to the known cures. Though initially originated from Mexico, the exact source of the origin is as yet unknown. Initial analysis pointed out the possibility of the virus having spread from pigs to humans and hence the name "Swine Flu". On further digging, the source was found to have originated from a human, with the possibility of the individual being associated with a pig farm. The virus spread rapidly within Mexico with at least 60 deaths confirmed till date. The next casualty was the United State where the cases have been more than that of Mexico but have only 3 confirmed deaths. The epidemic has rapidly spread to the rest of the world including Asia.
Distinct features of the virus:
1. Its different:
The virus is a unique strain and hence difficult to control and prevent or even cure.
2. Its contagious:
The virus has been known to be highly contagious and has well stirred up an epidemic. The World Health Organization is already considering declaring the Flu a pandemic.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of Swine Flu are very much like those of ordinary flu but for the fact that they are much more severe and very difficult to control.
1. High fever.
2. Severe cough.
3. Runny nose.
4. Headaches.
5. Chill.
6. Fatigue.
7. Sore throat.
8. Body aches.
Transmission:
1. Air:
The virus is known to spread rapidly through air. Infection can occur though sneezing or by being close through an infected person.
2. Contact:
Transmission can also occur through contact with an infected person or by using his belongings.
Prevention:
Until such a time that a vaccine or a cure is discovered, it is better to be safe by taking care of the following measures:
1. Personal hygiene:
a) Take utmost care to always wash hands with soap.
b) Never touch eyes, mouth or nose without proper cleanliness.
2. Cover and Contain:
a) Always cover your mouth and nose while sneezing and coughing.
b) Steer clear of infected individuals.
c) If you are also infected, check into a hospital immediately.
The world is rapidly falling prey to one of the worst epidemics in recent years. Though scientists claim to have decoded the genome of the virus and a vaccine may be on its way, it may still be some time before it is mass produced and available to the masses. Till such a time it is better to be safe and take utmost care to stay out of reach of the deadly virus. Stay away, stay safe!
