Swords and Sandals 2 Reviewed

Swords and Sandals 2 is a Flash based adaption of the classic fantasy-style RPG. Using simple cartoon style 2D graphics, and basic sound effects the game exhibits many of the elements you would expect from a classic role-playing game, such as turn based combat, level based advancement and item collecting.

While all of these elements are present, Swords and Sandals 2 puts its finger on the froward button never lets go. The epic story line has been replaced by a simple quest for gold and glory in the Arena. The world is compressed down to a single town that servers as staging area for your adventure.

This slim game style is evident from the first screen where you are tasked with creating your character. Rather than choosing among several races and classes, you are simply tasked with customizing a single male gladiator. Most of the customizing involves choosing a look for character. As with most games released under the Fizzy label, there are some tongue-in cheek options. Neon colored hair and nuclear skin tones are tucked in among the more traditional choices. You can also customize your stats a little, it is not mandatory.

After a short cut scene, you will be thrust into your first battle. Turn based battle systems are not know for their speed, but Swords and Sandals 2 does a good job of keeping the action fast paced. You have a variety of single click options to choose from. Your computer controlled opponent will respond instantly.

After the initial battle you find yourself in the town. You can click on any of the labeled buildings to enter and buy potions, armor or weapons as needed. One nice addition to the town is the use of random and timed events. If you are out at nightfall, you will have to choose between spending money on an Inn or taking your chances on the street. You will also be drawn into a number of random encounters that can have a big impact on your character's wallet and skill level.

Once you are ready to fight, the Arena presents two choices. If you battle in the duel, you only risk gold. Once your character reaches level four however, you can choose to enter the tournament. Tournament battles are to the death, and for those without the download version of Swords and Sandals 2 a single death means starting all over at character creation.

Is It Purchase Worthy?

Swords and Sandals 2 is a solid Flash game. It is a good squeal in that it sticks to the basic game play formula while adding new items and power ups. At its heart however, it still plays like a casual online adventure. Given the number of $20 game titles on the market, Swords and Sandals 2 simply doesn't offer enough to make it worth the price tag. It is an excellent casual Flash game, and well worth playing, but the not something you will play for days on end.

Beginner Tips

While Swords and Sandals 2 does away with many traditional RPG elements, it still favors strategy over click-'n kill game play. New players would be well advised to continue dueling long after they could enter the arena. For the first few levels at least, focus on building your strength and charisma over other stats.

Once you think you are ready, be sure to take advantage of the information the game gives you about your enemies. Before battle starts, you are able to see what weapons and armor your opponent is wearing. Consider these carefully and don't be afraid to back of out a tournament match at the last second.

Where To Play

Swords and Sandals 2 is playable on many websites, including the the developer's own. The most enjoyable place to play is probably http://www.arcadeboredom.com/games/464/swords-and-sandals-2-full-version.html. This site offers a full screen version of the game that helps minimize distractions.
