Just imagine sitting on the grass on the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge having a breakfast picnic. Today (25 October ADST) 6,000 lucky winners of an innovative tourism promotion competition are doing just that.

Breakfast on the Bridge is the centre-piece event of Crave Sydney, a major new festival celebrating Sydney with 31 days of food, outdoor art and fun during the month of October.

Hailed as the World's most dazzling picnic, organizers have laid 10,620 square metres of live Kikuyu grass from pylon to pylon across six lanes of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Picnic-goers will spend the morning having breakfast and enjoying the spectacular views across Sydney Harbour. Gates opened at 6.30am so ticket holders can spend the maximum amount of time on the Bridge.

New South Wales Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay said recently in the press - "The event will showcase Sydney's most famous icon in a way we've never seen it before." Ms McKay further said "In a unique twist, the Fete will feature 15 cows with a live milking display adding some extra color to the event. We have seen some remarkable things on the Bridge including horses and F1 cars, now we can add cows to that list."

The cost of this inaugural event is $1 million. NSW Premier Nathan Rees said it was likely to become an annual event, following the success of Sunday's turnout, which, he predicted, was worth $10 million in tourism dollars. Each winning ticket holder will be offered complimentary NSW produce when they enter the grassed zone. This will include local and regional fresh fruits, breads and yogurt. They can also bring their own breakfast treats and picnic gear. Wet-weather clothing will not be required as Sydney has perfect spring weather for this event.

Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world's largest steel arch bridge but not the longest. That's the New River Gorge in the USA. In its beautiful harbour location, Sydney Harbour Bridge has become renowned as the international symbol of Australia.
