Syesha Mercado Connects with Audience with Rendition of I Believe

Andrea Caruso
Still rebounding from losing her friend and roommate, Ramiele Malubay, last week, it's probably a good thing that Syesha Mercado got to perform an inspirational song this week.

She never ceases to amaze me with her risk-taking, and this week is no different. She chose to perform I Believe, which is the song that Fantasia performed when she won American Idol in Season 3. She chose the song because she feels that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible, and the song inspires you to give back to the world in your own way.

If Syesha wasn't as talented as she is, the possibility of being compared to Fantasia could potentially hurt her. I was never a fan of Fantasia, though, and when I heard Syesha's version of this song, I genuinely felt like I was hearing a fresh version of the song. It felt like she believed what she was singing. I think she also connected with the audience very well in this performance.

Vocally, Syesha was right on the money in tonight's performance. In my opinion, she is a much stronger vocalist than Fantasia, with a much more radio-friendly voice.

The judges definitely felt the same about the possibility of Syesha being compared to Fantasia. Of course the potential was there, and of course Syesha's performance was lacking the emotion that was in Fantasia's performance of this song when she won American Idol - the difference in circumstances is obvious. But to compare Syesha and Fantasia is difficult as well as they both have completely unique styles.

Overall, I think this performance could either help or hurt her this week. It really depends on how many Fantasia fans were watching American Idol tonight. If there were a lot of them, Syesha may be in trouble, but if people can avoid making the comparison, I think this performance has the potential of standing out and catapulting her up the ranks.

Go Syesha! Show the best that you can be and always stay away from your comfort zone so that people will now and then see and appreciate some more the "hidden" side of you. I am very glad and proud to see you improve each week! Get those high notes and shake your bootylicious! :) If you have to choreograph very well your performance by flying like an angel from heaven, then do it! After giving your best, everything will follow. God bless you Syesha!

I thought Syesha did a great job vocally. However, no one can emote a song like Fantasia and anyone who tries will come up short!!

My favorite song by Fantasia was when she sat on the floor during the competition and sang Summertime. I haven't followed her music since she won. Having said that, I think that Syesha is enormously talented and every weeks takes a chance by choosing songs by very popular, well known, talented singers and does the songs justice. It's always a risk when a competitor sings a Whitney Houston song but last week I thought she NAILED it, regardless of what the judges said. I love Syesha! And besides, she has stage presence and personality.

Syesha sang nice and enough of the comparatives , this American Idol season 7, lets have fun while it last.. anyway Syesha did a nice job and Fantasia too, but now it's about Syesha vote!!!

  • ALL of Fantasia's songs are filled with emotion.4/8/2008

If you ever heard Fantasia sing ANY song from Summertime, Dreams, I Believe, Greatest Love of All, Even "I'm Here" or Broadway. Each and every song she sings she sings with emotion. Summertime is considered her best performance on idol and that didn't have anything to do with the finale. Just give Fantasia her props please and stop making excuses of why her songs are filled with Emotion. They are filled with emotion because she's a soul singer. Singing from the soul.

You just don't sing a Fantasia song, her voice is so amazing and unique. Syesha is a goner.
