Syesha Mercardo Departs American Idol

An Expected Farewell

Simon will get his wish for a "humdinger" of a finale next week by bidding adieu to the final contest not named David.

On May 14, 2008, Syesha Mercardo received the news in front of a full house and millions of viewers that her hope of being crowned the next American Idol ended that evening. In the early episodes, I would have never expected Syesha to reach the final three spot. There were plenty of nights, she stood with a fellow contestant and I thought... "Ryan's going to say Syesha, it has to be Syesha". But she pulled through time and time again and became a better performer each week. That number three position was the end of the road, though; she was no competition for Archuleta or Cook. Her sandwiched placement in the round of the final three was a tell-tale sign that producers knew she was the weakest contestant.

As I think of when results were announced and Syesha was actually "kicked off", I could not help but notice the grace exhibited by all three performers. Sure, Archuleta appeared relieved and excited, but contained himself knowing two others were waiting to learn their fate. Similarly, when David Cook was told he too would be in the finale, he kept his composure and comforted Syesha with a hug. There was no self-indulgent hurrah that a few past contestants couldn't (or wouldn't) contain. The guys headed to the couch with a bit of a hug and were respectful of Syesha's moment of disappointment that soon turned to glory.

Although I'm sure she was very much expecting a dismissal (when Paula tells you that you won't advance, it's a huge red flag), she still must have been hopeful. She is definitely a dreamer. But she took the news well and gave a great final performance of "If I Ain't Got You". Watching her father in the audience mouthing the words was heartwarming. His eyes showed he is one proud papa. He didn't seem to care if she was third or if she advanced. He felt joy watching his daughter entertaining and showcasing her talent.

Syesha has no concerns. This lady is meant for Broadway. She uses the stage well and her body and face are as expressive as her voice. It is natural for her: a gift. Syesha Mercardo labels herself as an actress. Indeed, she is and the world waits.
