When someone ingests or swallows deodorant, poisoning can occur. There is ethyl alcohol and aluminum salts in deodorant, which are poisonous ingredients. Some deodorants may have other toxic properties as well.
Symptoms of Deodorant Poisoning
Some of the signs of poisoning after ingesting deodorant include blurred vision, abdominal pain, burning pain in the throat and burns to the eye, breathing difficulty, collapse, and coma. Other symptoms can be vomiting, rash, slurred speech, no urine output, low blood pressure, lack of alertness, diarrhea, and the inability to walk in a normal manner.
Deodorant Poisoning Treatment
According to Medline Plus, give water or milk unless someone at Poison Control tells you not to, or if the patient has vomiting, decreased level of alertness, or convulsions. Call emergency units out to the patient. Try to know the amount of the deodorant swallowed, the name of the product, and the time it was swallowed. Once the emergency personnel are there, they will monitor the vital signs and the overall health of the patient. They may give IV fluids, breathing support, or activated charcoal. Other treatments may include an endoscopy to check for stomach and esophagus burns, medicines for the poisoning symptoms, and a gastric lavage to wash out the stomach.
Severe poisoning from deodorant is unlikely and the prognosis is good for the patient's outcome. The quicker they can get treatment the better off their recovery will be.
