Symptoms and Types of Yeast Infection in Children

Children with Different Kinds of Yeast Infection

Barbara K
Many people are unaware that children have yeast infections. A fungus is the cause of some yeast infections. Most yeast infections in children are from antibiotics which are the number one cause.

Some babies get an infection in their mouth within a few days after birth. This is a yeast infection known by another name as thrush. This is caused by an imbalance in their mouth. Although it is not serious the symptoms are painful. Therefore should be treated as soon as possible to subdue the pain. This infection is called Candida and is brought about by yeast or a fungus. Also, there is a small amount of Candida with good bacteria in the mouth. Also there are organisms in the mouth. These organisms will maintain order until there is a disruption in the balance. The imbalance allows the yeast to grow creating the thrush.

These are some other causes of the oral infection. One is conditions that may cause the immune system to be weakened. Others are different kinds of drugs such as corticosteroids, antibiotics and immunosuppressive. Another cause is diabetes.

Some of the symptoms of the thrush are patches that are white, soreness and redness in the mouth. Babies will shy away from the bottle because of the pain. Other young children may not want to drink or eat.

It is not unusually for children to get a yeast infection. Children also have yeast infections in the genital area. But it is not uncommon for them to have this infection in the butt area. This type of yeast infection moves through the digestive system leaving yeast along the way. The cause of this kind of yeast infection often occurs from antibiotics. Antibiotics are given to children for other types of bacteria infections. If there has been no antibiotic used something else is the cause. Do not exclude diabetes having this checked is a good idea. There are different things that will increase yeast in the body. One of these is sugar which feeds the yeast. Children consume sugar everyday in many forms. Eating healthy and cutting down on the sugar intake as much as possible will help. Less sugar will help with many things in children.

These are some of the symptoms of the infection in the butt area. They are redness, some bleeding, sores, itching and when passing bowel some pain may occur.

Some of the symptoms of the vaginal yeast infection are redness, a yellowish discharge and a strong odor. Others are hives, diarrhea, repeated diaper rashes and gas from difficulties of the digestive system.

Nystatin is a prescription many doctors will prescribe for these yeast infections. It is an antifungal medication from a soil-based and yeast. This medicine fights against the yeast infection. Therefore when an antibiotic is given to the child asking for Nystatin is advised. By giving the Nystatin will prevent the yeast from going through the intestines. Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria but the good bacteria too. This will also keep this from happening.

Even though a yeast infection is not serious it can be very painful. Therefore with any of these symptoms it is best to consult a pediatrician right away.
