How to Tell when Wisdom Teeth Are Coming In

Lyn Vaccaro
Trying to tell when wisdom teeth are coming in can be a vague process. Most people just seem to sense that something somewhere in their mouths is changing, prompting them to take notice of the issue, then scrutinizing closer over time, they find out that their wisdom teeth are indeed on their way into their mouths.

There are a few basic symptoms that can help with establishing whether or not it's your wisdom teeth that are on their way. I've experienced a few of these symptoms myself when my own wisdom teeth made their appearance at the age of 22. The following paragraphs will outline a few wisdom teeth symptoms, if you suspect this could be the case for you.

Cheek and Tongue Biting
This was one of the first things I noticed. When I'd chew my food or talk, I'd find myself biting one or the other cheek inside my mouth, causing some soreness and inflammation. I couldn't figure out what was going on at first, however once I took the time to look inside my mouth I was able to see why, leading me to my next symptoms of wisdom teeth coming in.

Rounded Gum Formations
Once I looked into my mouth with a flashlight, it became clear that at the very back of my gums, where my teeth ended, were some rounded formations that appeared where the wisdom teeth were pushing upward as they were erupting outward from under my gums. This symptom will make things pretty clear to you.

Headaches
I recall having more frequent headaches with my own wisdom tooth symptoms. If you find this to be the case for yourself combined with some of these other wisdom tooth symptoms, more than likely, that's the cause. This happens because the pressure in the mouth from the new teeth extends to the jaw, resulting in a headache at times.

Problems Talking
Often, one of the symptoms of wisdom teeth can include more of a challenge when you speak. I found this to be the case for myself, mostly because cheek biting mentioned above compromising my speaking capability. Usually, once this happens, you've already figured out the issue.

Symptoms of wisdom teeth can be bothersome and irritating, and I know for myself, it seemed to go on forever. Within a number of weeks, though, the symptoms will decrease as your mouth and teeth adjust to the new environment.
