Synergy Organic Raw Kombucha Tea in "Gingerberry" Review

The Pen
A few months ago I was shopping for produce at a local grocery store when I spotted Synergy's Organic Raw Kombucha Tea. Because it was organic and raw it automatically caught my eye and I wanted to try it. There were several different flavors available, but I went with the Gingerberry flavor because it was one of the least intimidating ones. A 16oz bottle costs $3.99.

The makers of Synergy claim that the Gingerberry Kombucha will "rejuvenate, restore, revitalize, replenish and regenerate," and that it supports digestion, metabolism, the immune system, appetite control, weight control, liver function, body alkalinity, anti-aging, cell integrity, and healthy skin and hair."

The Synergy Gingerberry Kombucha contains 95% G.T.'s organic raw kombucha, organic blueberry juice, and organic fresh pressed ginger juice. Synergy notes that due to the fermentation of the tea that it might contain a trace amount of alcohol.

An 8oz serving of the Kombucha Gingerberry contains 35 calories, 0 fat calories. It contains 10mg of sodium, 8g of total carbohydrate, 4g of sugar, and 0g of protein.

It has folic acid (25% DV), vitamin B2 (20% DV), vitamin B6 (20% DV), vitamin B1 (20% DV), vitamin B3 (20% DV), and vitamin B12 (20% DV).

It contains the probiotics Lactocillus bacterium and S. Boulardii. And it also contains antioxidants and organic acids - EGCG 100mg, glucuronic acid 10mg, lactic acid 25mg, and acetic acid 30mg.

Taste of

Synergy Organic Raw Kombucha Tea in "Gingerberry"

Synergy makes a lot of claims about this tea, but my main concern was that it would taste awful.

Once I got it home I immediately opened it and took a sip. As soon as I opened the bottle it popped as if a lot of pressure was being released. It smelled really sour like vinegar, and once I tasted it I found that it's unlike any drink that I've ever had.

On one hand it tastes sweet and slightly acidic like a carbonated blueberry juice, but on the other hand it tastes very strongly of ginger. Then it left a slightly sour, pickle juice-like aftertaste in my mouth.

I was really overwhelmed by it at first because the flavors of the Synergy Kombucha are very strong, especially the ginger. So even though I didn't hate it, I just couldn't drink more than a few sips of it at a time.

I actually kept it in my fridge for a few weeks, drinking a bit here and there, and by that time the taste mellowed and I was finally able to drink it all, and I actually began to really enjoy the taste.

Results After Using

Synergy Organic Raw Kombucha Tea in "Gingerberry"

I found that I had the best results with the Synergy Gingerberry when I drank it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. I noticed that it really did suppress my appetite for a few hours, probably because it tastes so sour. And I noticed that it gave me a bit of energy, more than I would have had with plain water or regular tea.

In the End...

By the time that I finished my bottle of Gingerberry, I really started to like the taste of it, and I liked the way it made me feel. I'm still not at the point where I could finish a whole 16oz bottle of it in one day, but I will definitely buy it again regularly.

If you're not into ginger or sour tasting drinks skip it. But if you like experimenting with strong and interesting flavors I'd recommend Synergy's Gingerberry. It's one of those things that you either love or hate.
