SYTYCD: July 14 2010; Top 7: Ashley Galvan Injured; Alex Wong Surgery; Robert & Allison Mind-Blowing Travis Wall Dance
So You Think You Can Dance, Season 7: July 14 2010; The Top 7 Perform - Minus Ashley
Ashley Galvan cannot dance tonight. During a Monday rehearsal, she experienced rib pains. Doctors advised her not to dance this week. The rules place her automatically in the bottom three. If she is deemed unable to dance next week, she will be cut from the competition tomorrow night.
Update on Alex Wong: He had surgery on Monday night. A tape showed a smiling Alex from his hospital bed after the surgery. He looked relaxed and relieved. The doctors are pleased with their restorative results.
Contestants' performances with All-Stars.
Lauren and Mark: Lauren Froderman danced a Tahitian Dance routine with all-star Mark Kanemura, choreographed by Tiana Liufau, her first for So You Think You Can Dance. Music: 'Jungle' by Last Voices. This was the first Tahitian routine on the show-the headdresses and costumes were made up of tall feathers. Nigel admired Lauren's fara pus (fast hips)- they were hot, fast, and amazing. Mia said the dancing was absolutely fascinating. She said Lauren was like a duck in heat, which was a compliment. She loved the poise and posture. She said the performance was absolutely wonderful. She loved it. Adam said, "Lauren, I can't believe you just did that- that was amazing." He thought her energy was high and her technique spectacular.
AdéChiké and Anya: AdéChiké Torbert danced a Salsa with all-star Anya Garnis, choreographed by Liz Lira, also a first-time choreographer for SYTYCD. Music: 'Oyelo Que Te Conviene' by Eddie Palmieri. Nigel called the choreography competition-style; Adam said it was hard-ass. Nigel loved the rip-roaring start-when AdéChiké tossed Anya into the air doing horizontal double-twirls. Mia told AdéChiké he'd made a good attempt but he lacked fluidity in his arm work and his hip action wasn't there. Adam said, 'You blew through it' and 'you were there for her every second'.
Jose and Courtney: Jose Ruiz danced Broadway with all-star Courtney Galiano, choreographed by Joey Dowling. Music: 'Mister Cellophane' from Chicago (Motion Picture Soundtrack). Nigel said that when you take away Jose's personality, his lack of training shows. The usually joyful Jose played a very sad part- too sad, thought Nigel. Mia agreed with him. Adam advised Jose to get dance training. He said he needed finish, lines, and greater stretching ability.
Robert and Allison: Robert Roldan danced Contemporary with all-star Allison Holker-who is recovered from last week's wrist injury. The routine was choreographed by Travis Wall. Music: 'Fix You' by Coldplay. It's a very emotional piece because Travis devised it for his mother, who has had major surgery. The dance depicts mother and son dancing- she is ill, he tries to fix her... then the pair break out into a high-energy glorious dance, as if she is healthy and whole again... yet it ends with him walking her, her feet on his... she is still 'broken'. Audience and judges gave an emotional enthusiastic standing ovation.
Nigel said the choreography and the dancing transcended the competition. Nigel called Robert a fantastic dancer. Mia was crying as she recalled the week her mother passed away. She herself often choreographs personal emotional pieces. Adam said this was the best he'd ever seen Robert dance- who was dancing for his own mom (she sat in the audience) and said he was stellar. He thinks the piece will be nominated for an Emmy. He called it one of the performances of the season.
Billy and Anya: Billy Bell danced the Jive with all-star Anya Garnis, choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. Music: 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light' by Meat Loaf. Mia summed up Billy's performance by saying it was absolutely stellar. His training showed. She loved his lines, his sharpness, and his connection with his partner.
Kent and Neil: Kent Boyd danced Broadway with all-star Neil Haskell, choreographed by Tyce DiOrio. Music: 'Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, MO' from Damn Yankees. Nigel said Tyce had put every trick in the baseball-themed dance. He told Neil to watch out for his all-star position. Mia said, "I love boys so much." She called Kent and Neil two great male dancers. She loved the strong male dancing. She loved everything about it. Adam said this was the athletic side of Bob Fosse. He said Kent had made it look effortless.
Contestants' performances with fellow contestants.
Lauren and Billy danced Jazz to a routine choreographed by Mandy Moore. Music: 'Boogie Shoes' by KC and the Sunshine Band. Nigel said it was absolutely adorable. He told Billy that Jazz fits him. He told Lauren she's not going home. Mia said the choreography and performance were 'in the pocket'- quirky, groovy, and fantastic. Adam said Billy had lost himself in the dance. He told Lauren, "I think the boys have something to be afraid of. You're killing me lately."
Jose and all-star Dominic, substituting for Ashley, took advantage of the unexpected partnership and danced the first B-Boy routine ever on SYTYCD, the first duet of 'Breaking'- choreographed by Napoleon & Tabitha D'Umo, with help from B-Boy Legacy (Season 6 contestant). Music: 'Battle for the Beat' by District 78. Nigel, who had disliked Jose's first performance of the night, shouted that Jose had redeemed himself. He said no other contestant on the show could have done what he had done tonight. Mia laughed as she repeated, "I love boys." She told Jose to train in dance and fine-tune. But she loved his performance and said it was awesome. Adam said it was hot. He also said, "That's the way to compete, Buddy."
AdéChiké and Kent danced Contemporary, choreographed by Dee Caspary. Music: 'You Only Disappear' by TomMcRae. Nigel praised told Kent that 'with Alex Wong out of the way' he could become the 'champion'. Mia said Kent's strength and organic quality were breathtaking. She told AdéChiké that he's like a gazelle and his lines are powerful. She said, "It's been a great week for you." Adam said both dancers were brilliant.
Robert and all-star Kathryn, substituting for Ashley, danced the first Disco routine of the season, choreographed by Doriana Sanchez. Music: 'Instant Replay' by Dan Hartman. Nigel said there's no time to stop in dancing Disco. He told Robert, "You didn't stop. You gaves lines, strength." He called him tremendous. Mia said Robert had not been masculine enough. Nigel completely disagreed with her. Adam said, "I bought it- you sold it, I bought it."
Tonight's votes by America's TV viewers will place three dancers in danger tomorrow. The three will have to dance for their lives. Of the two girls and five guys, AdéChiké is most likely to go home, unless Ashley's injury is long-term. Then, Ashley will leave the competition. She wasn't in the audience tonight.
