SYTYCD S7: July 28-29 2010; What, No Sexy Cat Fight? Who's Androgynous? Who's Bollywood?

So You Think You Can Dance, Season 7, Elimination Results: Billy Belly & Jose Ruiz Cut

Rik Merchant
SYTYCD 2010, July 28 & 29. So You Think You Can Dance during the week of the Top 6, for a second week in a row since no one was sent home last week, had more drama-two more injuries and some surprises. Lauren Froderman sustained a minor injury after her last routine on Wednesday night. Jose Ruiz danced his routines with a pulled groin. Billy Bell wore a knee brace in-between performances this week. He didn't dance at all last week having sustained a knee injury the week before last.

For once on Thursday night, cut night, the brilliant Robert Roldan was not in the bottom three. He's too talented to have ever been in danger. When he did Latin Ballroom, he danced as if a Latin Ballroom dancer. Last night when he danced Bollywood-a mix of dances including Hip-Hop and the exhausting Bhangra-he danced Bollywood as precisely as the best Indian male Bollywood movie star. He also looked the part. If he can act, he could easily star in a Bollywood film. Champion ballroom dancer and choreographer-and guest judge this week-Toni Redpath, appreciated him immensely to the point that she would like to partner with him.

For the first time on cut night, Lauren Froderman was in the bottom three. The two other dancers in the bottom three were Jose Ruiz and Billy Bell, leaving the following three safe-Robert Roldan; tween idol Kent Boyd; AdéChiké Torbert. Because the judges sent no one home last week, two of the three in danger were to be sent home. And one would join the three safe dancers to carry on next week. Although Lauren missed performing the opening routine on Thursday, she did dance for her life. Jose and Billy also danced solos for their lives.

On Wednesday, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told Jose Ruiz this was probably his last week. So, it was no surprise when the judges came out of deliberation on Thursday night with a unanimous decision, which included cutting Jose from the show. Jose has done tremendously well but needs training. If he'd had it, he probably wouldn't have been cut this week. When it came to Billy Bell-who boldly wore red pants and a voluminous pastel-pink scarf-Nigel told him that his 'androgynous look' was not connecting with audiences. Thus, Billy was cut. That left Lauren to continue on, the only diva left standing since July 15 when Ashley Galvan was cut due to an injury that would cause her to miss a few weeks of dance.

Lauren is lucky to be staying because her two Wednesday night routines were stale. She danced a lackluster Foxtrot with AdéChiké. She was good, he was dull. Her all-girl Broadway number with all-star Allison Holker was greatly lacking in pizzazz and originality. All season long, the guys have been partnering up out of necessity, due to the dearth of girls. Finally, two girls danced together. It was as if watching an ordinary chorus line but with two dancers. This viewer wanted to see a sexy cat fight. Or, if not that, then something extraordinary with two females. Granted, Lauren and Allison can't throw each other around the way male partners do. Or could they?
