Tai Chi For Mental and Physical Health

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese art that focuses on body awareness and internal energy. The emphasis of this system being chi, or internal energy. This emphasis gives Tai Chi the traits of an internal martial art as opposed to an external one. Tai Chi has long been a renowned system in China for maintaining health and extending life. It's slow movements cultivate balance, strengthen joints, tendons, and muscles. It's slow, even breathing helps increase oxygen levels in the blood, improving brain and organ function. It is also an excellent way to relieve stress.

Tai Chi movement is practiced slowly. It requires patience and practice to become comfortable with the movements. The movement of Tai Chi, however, has benefits that far outweigh the cost. Slow movement strengthens the muscles and improves overall balance. As the muscles and tendons are slowly tensing and relaxing, muscular strength is gained quickly. Strengthening of the tendons helps protect the joints and helps to prevent injury. Also, the slow twisting of the torso improves blood flow to the internal organs, increasing their efficiency.

Tai Chi focuses on abdominal breathing as a means to attain proper relaxation, and to cultivate chi. The slow, deep breathing helps to relieve stress and relax the muscles. Abdominal breathing is the most efficient way to breath as it utilizes the diaphragm to increase oxygen intake. With more oxygen in the bloodstream, the brain receives more oxygenated blood, improving it's function. Also, circulation is improved due to the relaxed state of the muscles. This means that more blood is reaching the organs and delivering more oxygen to the cells.

Tai Chi is seen as an extremely good way to relieve stress. The deep breathing and muscle relaxation physiologically reduce stress levels. Tai Chi teaches it's practitioners to " listen inwardly " and " look into infinity ". This basically means that when practicing Tai Chi, you are to listen you your heartbeat and breathing, and unfocus your eyes. This technique can help a person to take their mind off of whatever is causing them stress. As stress causes us to tense up our muscles ( sometimes involuntarily ), we see many health problems arise. High blood pressure can also result from stress. Tai Chi alleviates tension and slows breathing to reduce blood pressure.
