Take Care of YOU During the Holidays

V. Ann Moore
The holidays bring out the true takers and givers. This time of year can be most stressful to those whom work hard to give too much. As a result, extreme holiday givers lose focus on their own enjoyment. Holiday stress is added to the never ending day-to-day stress and the essence of the holiday season is undermined. If this sounds like you, it is time to rearrange your holiday priorities.

The sense of responsibility holiday givers experience drives many individuals to attempt to meet self-imposed, unrealistic demands. The holidays are not a time of year to be a perfectionist. This is the time to have fun and create meaningful memories with your loved ones.

To lessen the burden of expectations, plan ahead. If you must buy presents for everyone you know and plan that bombshell holiday party, start your preparation early. Start shopping and wrapping before Thanksgiving and break down the major time consumers to manageable increments. Keep a note pad handy to write ideas as they come. Think outside the box and use your resources. Ask friends and family to provide their signature dishes during holiday gatherings, help out with shopping, and decorating. It is likely your loved ones will be happy to help.

Also, a commonly overlooked aspect during the holidays is mental and physical health. Do not bury your healthy habits the minute you taste the turkey. Remember to stay active, eat moderate portions, and drink plenty of water. Find time to relax. Do not be afraid to take an hour out of your day to immerse yourself in an aromatic bath or your favorite team's game. One of your most important holiday goals should be to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. Along with dealing with the added pressures of holiday tasks, this will help you enjoy more of the holiday season.

Just as good time management, mental health, and physical well being are important, having fun should also be on the top of your priority list. Partake in holiday-like activities in which you can absorb the holiday spirit and play. Loosen up at the parties. Cruise through neighborhoods and enjoy the holiday light displays. Start a snowball fight with your kids. You can even take your digital camera and take pictures with every Santa you see on the streets. Whatever you find fun, do it.

Remember, the holiday season is a time to spend with your family, give thanks, and enjoy. If you make it a point to take care of yourself, you will have time to create lasting memories worthy of reminiscence. Life is too short to stress away the holidays.
