Take Care of Your Knees: Essential to a Healthy Life

Cat
You've never ran before. Then you decide to start running. All of the sudden, you're running a few miles every day, amounting to over 12 miles a week.

This is not the smart thing to do. A person that has started jogging with a group and has never ran too much before may pay a price. For example, one may decide to join a running group for a few weeks and continue with 30 minutes of jogging for about a month. Initially, he or she may not feel any pain, but it will catch up with them if their knees are not taken care of properly.

The following are easy and effective ways to prevent pain in your knees:

- Prior to a workout, always walk for a few minutes and stretch for at least five minutes. This should be done afterwords as well.
- Do not push yourself to a level that you have not reached yet. Slowly start off your routine, and increase the minutes or intensity each week. It's better to be safe than sorry.
- Find a pair of shoes that support your feet, and therefore, support your entire body. Asics is proven to be the best shoe among numerous runners.
- Sit up straight with feet always touching the floor (no crossing of the legs).
- Muscle train your body at least twice a week.
- Take glucosamine supplements daily. These can be found at a local grocery or vitamin store near you. Glucosamine lubricates your joints, protecting them.
- Try to keep your knee caps in alignment with your legs.
- Leaning on one leg whie standing can cause hip and knee pain.

Pain in your knees is a sign to stop whatever you are doing and do something about it. First, go to a doctor. Getting a prescription to go to a specialist and having permission to start physical therapy at your local hospital is the best thing you can do for yourself. These therapists are trained in your problem and within a few months you will feel much better. Also, there are many websites that provide great stretches and exercises to prevent and treat knee pain if you would like to perform physical therapy by yourself. Doing the stretches and exercises in the morning will be most beneficial for your body.

Taking care of your knees is a crucial daily activity that will protect you from pain and suffering in the future.
