Take a Holiday Getaway to Gozo, Malta

Karen Reams
For a holiday getaway without hustle and bustle may I suggest the small island of Gozo? Gozo can be found sitting in the Mediterranean Sea and is a part of the Southern European country of Malta. Gozo has a small population of approximately 31,000 people who are called Gozitans.

The countryside in Gozo is dramatic but also really picturesque and the coastline is spectacular with red sand beaches and many rocky inlets.

Life on Gozo moves at a leisurely pace with its rhythms dictated by the seasons, agriculture and fishing. And the people on this small island are welcoming and friendly.

It is thought that Gozo is the legendary Calypso's isle of Homer's Odyssey and the island is just steeped in myths and legends.

The island is dotted with Baroque Churches and old stone farmhouses plus historical sites, forts and one of the archipelago's best preserved prehistoric temple, Ggantija. So there is plenty of culture to explore whilst wondering around this amazing island.

This island also offers a great night-life for those that wish to whoop it up after a day of exploring or sunbathing plus many wonderful restaurants.

Getting to Gozo isn't too difficult. You can either take the Ferry from Cirkewwa or travel by helicopter from Malta International Airport.

The Ferry is the cheapest way to travel and it is just a short 30 minute crossing and sails past Comino with its fantastic blue lagoon. But if you wish to take the helicopter there are regular flights seven days a week which only take 10-15 minutes.

Once in Gozo you will find the main roads are generally good and well kept but there are some minor roads which can be a bit bumpy.

Although there is a good bus service on the island it is recommended that a person should hire a car. This way you can explore places that are off the beaten track.

Another reason to choose Gozo as a holiday destination is the variety of accommodation to choose from. There are many self-catering lodgings such as villas with pools, farmhouses, apartments and of course guest houses and hotels. The hotels on this island all come with the range of 3 to 5 stars.

However you decide to arrive on the island or where to stay I know that you will be awed by the beauty of the island and will clock up some wonderful and long lasting memories.
