There's no real easy way to get to Key West, Florida, American's southernmost point. But there is a laid back, relaxing option available at several Florida ports. Why fight the traveler's traffic on Highway One which runs directly through the Keys or white knuckle it on a tiny "puddle jumper" plane from Miami, let's say, to the Key West airport which doesn't provide direct flights to and from the rest of the country? Instead, you can leisurely float on over to this spirited island in luxury and style aboard a smooth sailing charter. Many American's actually fly into the Miami or Fort Myers airports, spend a night or two in a hotel and then hop on the ferry to spend a few days in the Keys.
The Big Cat ferry, for example, is a 155 foot long vessel that features panoramic windows, comfortable enclosed seating with tables, chairs and large flat screen, plasma TVs. A galley bar mixes up tropical drinks for purchase and also offers a variety of food and snacks during the trip. A large sundeck atop the Big Cat consists of cushioned bench seating with glorious views of the ocean and the occasional dolphin sighting along the way.
A knowledgeable and helpful staff will answer any questions that you may have regarding the boat itself or the quaint island town of Key West. They can offer tour suggestions, dinner ideas and even recommend and book a hotel room for a short or extended stay.
From the Fort Myers and Marco Island marinas, a round trip ticket for adults can be purchased for around $130. A one way ticket is about $75. Children from the ages of six through twelve cost $50, while children under the age of five, travel for free with the exception of a minimal port fee. Senior citizens will pay about $120 for round trip service and $75 for one way. Shuttles from Miami cost around $20 less than the above rates.
Charters depart daily from each marina between 8:30a.m.and 9:00a.m., arriving in Key West at around 12:30p.m. Then, you can enjoy a good five hours of swimming, snorkeling, shopping, eating and more before you have to re-board the ship and head back. Or you can opt to spend a few nights in paradise, visiting Mallory Square and its famous sunsets or Ernest Hemingway's favorite watering hole, Sloppy Joes's, before heading home. Key West shuttles depart the island every evening between 5:30p.m. and 6:00p.m., perfect timing to enjoy a sparkling sunset after a fun filled day from a comfortable cruiser.
On a side note, make sure you let the boat staff members knew exactly what your travel plans are so that they can adjust their daily manifest. Also, each guest aboard the charter is allowed to bring one medium sized duffle bag for the necessary items. Pack lightly though; since Key West is known for their island casual dress codes. In other words: tank tops, shorts and flip flops will suffice.
So leave the driving, the traffic and the frustration behind as you sit back and relax aboard a classy Key West Express shuttle. The clear aqua waters will be warmly welcoming you to America's own paradise, in less than four hours.
