Take a Moment

O. Harding
By chance, I sit at this computer
Near the window
Looking across a pasture;
A pasture battered by the feet
Of boys and girls
Competing for gold, silver and bronze
In their annual school's sports.

Today it is so quiet;
The children are all gone
And nature is left to itself
For those who have eyes to see,
And time to pause
For just a few moments,
To relax and enjoy
The best that life has to offer.

Right under my window,
I hear what resembles
The chatter of a thousand women,
As the wind activates
The million dry pods
On the woman's tongue tree.

A pair of ground doves
Walk to and fro on the half dry grass,
Trying to satisfy their aching hunger.
Under the dunks tree in the distance
A drove of blackbirds
Gather in the shade,
Flying from tree to ground,
Frolicking in their newfound serenity.
A few sparrows hurriedly fly from fence to tree
And back again
As though they are children
Playing the catcher game.

It's unusually quiet
'Cause the children
Are not there you see;
The only evidence of human kind
Are two black shoes left behind
By some forgetful child the day before;
They sit in the brilliant sunlight
Waiting patiently for the owner
To retrieve them once again.

Farther away, the landscape
Appears slightly hazy and gray,
Nevertheless peaceful, most peaceful.
Houses of the aspiring rich
Decorate the opulent landscape,
While a lonesome antenna
Kisses the cloudless sky.

Tall palm trees punctuate the distant horizon
As far as the eyes can see;
I am so glad
I took the time,
To pause for just a few moments,
To see and hear,
Relax and enjoy the best
That God has given me.
