Many premedical (and other) students start their time in Organic chemistry with much fear and trepidation, as a lot of them have heard horror stories of unbelievably hard tests, terrifying labs, and ridiculously difficult research projects from former students. However, as those that apply themselves will find, Organic really isn't too bad-in fact, it's almost what one might term as 'fun.' That being said, it is not necessarily very entertaining when one does not understand the myriad of syntheses occurring, or the various types of nomenclature. Once it 'clicks', it becomes almost second nature (i.e. looking at a reaction and just knowing the product already). This is where the better part of Organic kicks in, and the true wonder of the Carbon molecule may be seen.
The beginning of Organic may be a bit tricky, as it is a weird mix of review from general chemistry and some new information. However, once that foundation has been laid down, and you get into the reactions part of Organic, you are in good territory. Don't try to work out every single mechanism for every single reaction. Instead, make sure you can simply recognize a type of reaction, and its likely products, but also keep the mechanisms familiar. Too many students waste a lot of time on exams trying to right out the entire mechanism for a synthesis, when they should have already known the product right away.
What's really important in Organic chemistry is that you stay up-to-date with the information being taught in lecture. It is even better if you can even get a little bit ahead, by reading the book or notes before class. Staying with the professor is ultimately one of the key points in excelling in this class, but too many students fall behind, and assume they can catch up right before a test. Don't do this! Don't ever try to cram all the information you missed the night before an exam or quiz, as it is a terrible habit, and will only hurt your performance in class!
It's true that Organic can be difficult, just like other non-general Ed classes. However, if a fear of taking Organic is keeping you from working on a Chemistry minor or major, please, at least talk with someone who has taken the class, and get an honest opinion.

Post a CommentGood article. I'm taking organic chemistry currently. Keeping up is hard, but I do hope it will be fun once I understand the basics.
