Taking a cable car to the Cable Car Museum is a good idea because the parking on Nob Hill is crazy and you will have to be very lucky to find any parking anywhere near the museum. If you are parked in the city somewhere keep your car parked where it is. The trip to the Cable Car museum is far from any of the parking lots you might find so it is best to either be dropped off by someone in your group that does not want to go, or to take the cable car to the Cable Car Museum.
Once you finally get to the Cable Car Museum you will be pleasantly surprised to see that it is free. The museum is actually pretty small and you can get through the museum in 30 minutes if you are fast but if you want to take your time you can certainly stay longer.
The Cable Car Museum is not just a museum but a working museum. There are exhibits of San Francisco and Cable Car history. The museum also features a few old cable cars including the only surviving cable car from the first able car company in the city. Being a working museum it is where the Cable Cars are run. While you can not go down to the floor of where all the work is being done you can look through two different overhead locations to watch the cable cars at work.
If you are interested in vehicles, or machines then you will be interested in the Cable Car Museum. The museum certainly appeals more to guys that are interested in seeing the massive cables and learning how the system works. If you are a cable car fan you will also enjoy the museum. The museum hours vary by season but it always opens at 10 AM and stays open until 5 PM sometimes later.
The Cable Car Museum offers a unique look into the unique transportation system of the city. While the Cable Car Museum may not be the most famous museum in San Francisco it is one of the most unique and you will not find another museum like it anywhere else in the world.
