No Cows to Milk, No Pigs to Slop

If you're having trouble getting your corn planted or your squash harvested before it withers on the vine, it might be time to take a break from Farmville in The Land of Facebook and visit Farmville in the Land of Virginia.

Yep, you can visit Farmville smackdab in the middle of Virginia, and you don't have to worry about plowing the fields, buying wither insurance or selling your produce. Instead, you can take a self-guided walking tour through this historical town of 6.845 (2000 census), which includes the Whitman Building on North Main Street. It was built in the early 1860's and is the oldest storefront building in town with its original form.

There are over 25 historical structures to see on the tour, including the Beaulah African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was built in 1868. Inspired by the abolishment of slavery, some black members of Farmville Methodist Church established a church connected with the African Methodist Episcopal church. The church burned in 1900; but was rebuilt in 1901.

Other historical venues include The Confederate Cemetery, The Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, the Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park.

If you want to do a little shopping, Farmville has five shopping centers and a vibrant downtown to explore. For golfing enthusiasts, the Farmville Municipal Golf Course is open to the public seven days a week, while the art and culture lover will feel right at home at The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, which is sponsored by Longwood University.

A current exhibition is Seeds of the Past: The Keith Kissee Collection of American Art from the 1930s and 1940s, while collections include The William and Ann Oppenhimer Collection of Folk Art and The Rowe Collection of Chinese Art, which contains 240 pieces dating from 4000 B.C.E. to the 20th century.

Another reason to visit Farmville is the annual Hampden-Sydney Music Festival, which takes place during the last two weekends of May. This nationally recognized event features chamber music performed by world-class musicians. The Waterworks Players is community theater at its best, while The Commonwealth Chorale, made up of members from 14 counties in Virginia, perform everything from classical choral music to modern compositions.

The best part about Farmville, Virginia is that you can forget about the farm and stay in one of several chain hotels or in the Longwood Bed and Breakfast located on High Street. And you don't even have to feed your neighbor's chickens.
