Taking Advantage of All Writing Opportunities Around Daily Life

When you really want to make it as far as you can as a writer, you need to learn to take advantage of all writing opportunities around you and your daily life. No matter what type of writer you are, this is an opportunity that you can use to your advantage. For example, if you write articles and nonfiction, you can look for ideas and practical application in the things around you and the people that you know. If you write short stories, novels or other fiction, you can study people and situations around you to help you with your writing.

For some writers, this comes more naturally than others. If you are not a writer for which this comes naturally, then you may need to try a few techniques to help you get into the habit of looking to the world around you to help you write and write well.

For example, you can get a writer's notebook. This can be any type of paper and writing device that you are comfortable with and that you can get to in just a moment's notice to use no matter what you are out doing or at home doing. This notebook will be used for ideas, notes, doodles, titles and anything else you can think of that might pertain to people, life or your writing. Don't restrict yourself in this notebook. No one else has to see it but you can look back on it later for inspiration and ideas.

Another way to take advantage of the writing opportunities that are around daily life is to look at challenges or obstacles that you or people who you know face. These can lend themselves to your writing in many ways. You could put it in a story or you could write articles on how to overcome the problem or face the obstacle. You could even put a new or unique spin or twist on an old or commonplace problem.

As a writer, you always need to have your eyes and ears open and be aware of what is taking place around you. This is part of the job of the writer- to not be self-absorbed and to be aware of other people, other living things and the world around you in general. This also helps you to get in touch with your reader and write to them and for them. This is the key to successful writing.
