Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Matthew Schieltz
There is a good chance that you either know someone who has experienced Depression in the past or you, yourself, are experiencing it right now. Depression and other mental health disorders are very serious, and the World Health Organization predicts that by the year 2020, Depression will be the second leading cause of disability throughout the whole world. Since 2020 is not all that far off into the future, it is safe to say that Depression is among the top causes of disability right now throughout the world. When taking into consideration some of those facts that the World Health Organization presents to the public, why not do something about it? Why not take your own mental health and stability into your own hands so that you will not just become another statistic?

If you do want to do that, however, there are some major things that you can do throughout your daily life that will aid in the prevention of Depression and some of the other major mental health disorders. One of the first things that you can do for yourself is to develop an altogether positive attitude when it comes to your outlook on life. This may sound cheesy, indeed, but researchers have done studies that have shown that having a positive attitude throughout your life may not only lengthen your life a bit, but also cure you of some physical ailments. Certainly if that is true, then having a positive attitude will most definitely help to prevent some of the major mental health disorders, like Depression and Schizophrenia.

Another thing that can be done is to buy a dog, cat, or a pet. Studies have also shown, and the results are obvious, that owning a dog or cat lowers your blood pressure throughout your life. Lowering your blood pressure will also lower the increased risk of heart trouble and heart attacks. In addition to all of that, owning a pet will give you a sense of companionship if you didn't have that before. Bonding with your pet gives you not only a sense of accomplishment, but also the sense that he or she cares for you. And as all pet owners acknowledge, sometimes this can be especially helpful when considering arguments or fights with close family and friends. Pets are always there to cheer you up!

Meditation, visualization, and breathing techniques also go a long way to promote a healthy state of mind. Spending just 30 minutes a day, whether in the morning, night, or both, can help you clear your mind of troublesome thoughts or other happenings of the day. Taking that quiet time to yourself to think of nothing but your breathing and meditation will give you a clearer mind in which to use following your meditation and breathing session.

There are many more ways in which to promote a healthy mental state of mind; we have only touched the tip of the iceberg with the suggestions that have been considered. Knowing, though, that all of those things can go a long way to help you prevent Depression, Schizophrenia, and other mental health disorders, it would be a good start to practice relaxing your mindset now so that you won't have an increased risk of one of those mental disorders later!
