Taking Care of Moms and Dads with the Flu

What Kids Can Do when Parents Are Sick

Jaipi Sixbear
Single parent families present unique problems. What if Mom or Dad becomes sick with the flu? There is no one else to care for them. Even parents with partners are sometimes alone while the other parent works. Sometimes they are too sick to take care of themselves but not sick enough to go to the hospital. What should kids know about taking care of parents with the flu? When should they call someone else for help? How can kids be more helpful around the house when Mom or Dad has the flu?

Fluids
Kids can make sure parents are getting plenty of fluids. If they are too weak to get up, bring them a glass of water several times a day. Older kids can make hot drinks such as tea for Moms and Dads with the flu. This can be done in the microwave if the stove is off limits. Just place a tea bag in a coffee cup with water and microwave for two minutes. Add honey or lemon for a sore throat. A drop of peppermint extract will help clear sinuses. Fruit juices are great for parents with the flu.

Rest
This is probably the hardest thing to get parents to do. Make sure Moms and Dads with the flu get plenty of rest. Kids can bring pillows and blankets out to the couch where parents can relax and still keep an eye on the kids. While they are resting, kids can try to make a special effort to be quiet and refrain from fighting with brothers and sisters. Give Mom or Dad worry free care when they are sick with the flu.

Pamper Them
Parents pamper kids when they are sick with the flu. Now is the time to return the favor. Even small children can give Mom or Dad back rubs to ease aches and pains. Make them food if they are hungry. Bring them magazines or turn on the TV for them. Put their favorite movie in for them. Taking care of Moms and Dads with the flu helps them recover faster. If you're not sure how you can help, just ask.

Help Out
Moms and Dads have many responsibilities around the house. When they have the flu, these jobs still need to be done. Older kids can care for their younger brothers and sisters. Babies may need to be dressed, fed and changed. Cleaning house and doing other household tasks like laundry and taking out the trash can be very helpful as well.

Call Someone
If parents are too sick with the flu for kids to handle, call another adult for help. Friends and relatives are a good place to start. If kids don't know these numbers they can call a friend and ask their friend's parents for help.Let kids know what constiutes an emergency too. Parents should always teach their kids how to dial 911 if needed.

Great advice! I think parents should print and laminate this for sticking to the fridge during such times. ;-)
