Taking Care of Your Skin

How Much Do You Know About Your Skin?

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of your body, weighs between 7-9 pounds, and covers an area of 20 square feet?

Your skin works very hard to regulate body temperature, eliminate harmful elements, and secrete waste.

What Is Your Skin?

Skin is made of two main top layers- the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is made up of nerve fibers and cells that are shed continuously throughout our lives. The epidermis is covered by a thin layer made of oil and natural secretions, called the acid mantle. The acid mantle maintains a balance between acidity, alkalinity and is better described as the PH balance.

How the Epidermis Renews Itself

For a person that is 15 and 25 years of age, the cell of the epidermis renews itself about every 20 days. For a person in their 30s, the cell renewal rate slows to every 28 days. As the natural exfoliation process slows, the skin accumulates more and more dead cells on its surface. This slower exfoliation process causes the skin to lose luster and resilience, thus the skin begins to appear dull and less vibrant as a person ages.

The Dermis

The dermis is just beneath the epidermis. The dermis secretes perspiration and sebum, controls hair growth, and covers connective tissue. Sebaceous glands lubricate the skins surface as well as growing hair. The sebaceous glands produce a natural moisturizer that keeps skin soft. A healthy dermis is supple and flexible due to the right amount of collagen.

The healthier you are, the healthier your skin will be. I believe that God made our bodies and Jesus can keep our skin looking great. I believe that God can give us wisdom and show us what to eat, how much exercise we need, and He can tell us how much proper rest we need for our bodies.

Jesus is the prince of peace and having peace in our hearts and minds are very important to how we look and feel. I believe only Jesus can give us peace, but also eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, drinking fresh water, having a consistent skin care regimen for our skin type, and getting an adequate amount of exercise really does help our skin to radiate a healthy glow and natural beauty.

Now that you know what your skin is, you are now ready to embark on a journey and an important mission to care for the largest organ of your body- Your SKIN!

I love your reference to Jesus being the Prince of Peace and the fact that knowing Him improves how we look and feel. Be blessed.
