If this is the first time that you're buying a ferret, it is recommended that you buy an adult and not a kit (baby ferret). If you are buying an adult ferret you usually have to go to the shelters and if you're buying a kit, then it is usually in a pet shop. The good thing about buying an adult ferret is that it is already trained. A baby ferret known as a kit is not trained at all and it is pretty hard to train them. Also make sure to spray or neutered because a female can die if they need to breed and a male ferret would become very aggressive and smelly. Now let's see the second step in picking a good ferret.
Let's look at the ferret's appearance. First of all the ferret has to have equal, shiny eyes. It can't be runny or crusty. They should have a warm and dry nose or a cold and wet nose. Make sure the ferret's nose isn't runny because if it is, the ferret is probably sick. Also make sure that they are walking straight and not wobbly or limping. These are some things to look at while picking your ferret.
The most important thing is making sure that the ferret had his or her shots and how to make your ferret safe. One tip to keep your ferret safe is don't let your ferret go outside so often because they may catch some disease from mosquitoes. The other tips are in the next paragraph. The kits and the adults must have its distemper shots when he or she is four months old and a rabies shot when they are six months old to avoid the risk of rabies and other sicknesses. They should have a yearly distemper and rabies shot to have a lower chance of having these sicknesses. You also have to look at your ferrets medical records. Now that we have covered the medical part of the ferret, it is time to look at their environment.
Now some really important things to look at are their environment. Make sure that there are no dangerous toys and that the cage is not too small for the ferret. Everything should be clean and there has to be nothing to hurt your ferret. Having wired floors for hamsters would harm your ferret's feet until they eventually bleed. Your ferret's food and water needs to be clean too. These new tips should help your ferret's safety.
The other thing is to see if your ferret likes you. These are some questions you should ask yourself. Does your ferret nibble you playfully or bite you hard and run away (Also see how the seller responds to this. If the seller hits the ferret, then the ferret might not trust in humans)? When you squeeze a toy does he or she respond? Does the ferret runs away from you or does he or she cuddles with you? After those questions you will see if the ferret likes you.
After all that, you might just find the perfect ferret for you. Take him or her home and play with it. Make sure you get your ferret a nice home and take him or her to their yearly shots. Have a nice time with your ferret!
