Taking it Off: The In's and Out's of Being a Webcam Stripper

Lana Somers
I was at a loss for words the day I walked into the house and found my best friend and roommate nude and in a questionable position in front of the camera.

How could I have missed the fact that she was part of the ever-growing group of young women that were choosing to work at home and in front of the camera performing sexual acts for men and women alike all around the world?

We had been living together for a couple of months and I thought she had a regular job at a studio downtown. It turns out that she did have a regular schedule at the studio but it was far from a regular job. She had been performing on camera for months, and had been making quite a lucrative salary doing so.

At the price of $3.99 per minute and her making half of that profit she was earning four times more than I was at my job as an administrative assistant. She was earning as much as I in a week, rather than the hard month and constant hours that I was logging at my job. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't jealous or tempted. I had the chance to observe her one day - and the shows were tame. It turns out that she had moved the show into our home and had learned to set up her own network and was now grossing 100% more of the profits.

It seemed like relatively easy work. The prerequisites that you were required to be somewhat attractive, able to flirt, and hold a conversation, be a good actress and able to perform in cam - live from your own home.

There is a new generation of women that are trying to have it all for as little as they can expend. I can safely say that we are part of this group - we want everything for nothing and are prepared to stop at nothing to get this. Would I go as far as stripping on camera?

I decided that I was unable to perform - I was shy, timid and inexperienced in the new age world of adult entertainment. There are more women choosing to take it all off. Whether the money, the desire to be sexy or the chance at fifteen minutes of fame - I am unsure whether my ethics would allow me to perform. Is money enough to sway some? The majority of webcam performers say yes, as well as the other percentage? It is their secret claim to fame!

http://www.zolaenterprises.com used to have an article written by strippers in dallas showing they were not really dancers. The most attractive and best dancer was lucky to make 50.00 in a 12 hour shift. The fat and ugly that have sex made alot. Stripping is not dancing and a job but, it is prostitution in clubs. That is why they have vip rooms for sex. Most strippers that go to dance can not even pay out some nights. guys tip for lap dancers and sex only in dallas. that is facts every nows. strippers and dancers make nothing, hookers make money but get stds and pass them along.

I really dont see the big hoo haa about it! Me and my girlfriend do it because we enjoy it, We get a kick out of people watching us, We were doing it for free at first and then thought well since we enjoy it so much we may as well get paid for it. I really dont see where morals come in to it, I mean come on! Were not living in the victorian age and we dont want to. How can you feel downgraded by people paying money to watch you strut your stuff, telling you that you look great! if anything it boosts ourself esteem (not that we need that to boost it)

I had a friend who was a stripper in Dallas and she made a lot more money than I did as a Director of Development. She paid off her car, all her school loans and debts, and paid for a $10,000 Microsoft certification program in just over a year. Then, when she'd finished her certification program, she quit stripping and was then completely debt-free with a great new Microsoft job :)

You're right Lori. Some might say something like, "Use what the good Lord gave ya while ya still got it!" but I disagree with that because a) what the good Lord gave ya is Time to make arrangements for when you can no longer use any of that other stuff and b) whatever nerdy boys get out of seeing you 'shake that thing,' they also waste money getting it and waste time doing 'whatever they do'.

I think in the younger generation that nudity is seen as less of a taboo than it has been before. I believe this is good - There is such a thing as being a prude!

I don't believe that the nudity is such a bad thing at all. Now as far as seeing some of the other things that go on with the webcam shows...not for me, but to each their own. To be honest, if a lady is comfortable with her body and chooses to make a living in this way, then what is the difference between that and a person who chooses to earn a living as a carpenter if they are good with their hands?
    Great article, Lori. enjoyed reading!

Secretsides and Donna Porter make good points. It's just incredible you walked in and found out your roommate (and best friend) was involved in this. It definitely sounds like a VERY tempting solution to working/money and I've worked way too many minimum wage jobs to deny it. But still, I think there's some innate worth in hard work all the same.

I looked into this field a bit for a crime story I was writing - and I'll say the competition for attention and to do more and more outrageous things is rampant. I just couldn't help to but to be saddened by essentially teenagers and young women, who aren't even old enough to understand their sexuality, subject themselves to what I would say, for many not all, is a dark and calloused life. And I wonder how many need drugs or alcohol to perform. Classic stripping is far tamer and many of those women do not have a happily ever after life.
Yes, some play it smart and use the money for college or their kids and get out. But I suspect that is not the majority. Just look at MySpace - 14 y.o. baring as much as they can for attention -- to me we're heading down the wrong path as a society. Guess I should of wrote an article to this. Thanks for sharing. :-)

I believe that it is morally wrong, just my opinion, and too easy to slip into more vile behavior and get sucked in (no pun intended) and not be able to get out because of the easy money and then lower your self esteem, good article though
