Taking a Taxi Cab in Las Vegas

Needed Information, and Tips You May Not Know About Being a Cab Consumer

Jenia Silver
When visiting Las Vegas most people are aware that certain plans for taking a cab ride or getting a rental car in done in advance. Either way the expense and convenience can be measured in either direction, depending upon the needs of each person. What is not commonly known on approaching the use of hiring a driver are the allowed and restricted areas for cabs to be of service in. With heightened security measures, and overcrowding along the strip, Las Vegas has long since been sophisticated in regulating this industry.

All city's will have a special agency to maintain and coordinate the business practice of cab companies. Not often thought about, a ride in the wrong direction or out of the way was once a feared and common scam among the trade. Just as similar as hailing a cab from the street, as used in Ney York City cabs, is also prohibited. The 5,000 cars in service inside of Las Vegas rely on it's Taxi Authority to determine which cab may be in a certain part of town, such as the airport or at local casinos. The term for this zoning policy is known as a medallion. Attached to side of every cab, the color on the tin metal license belongs to a coverage section. In fact, drivers who pick up passengers where they are not allowed to can be ticketed and fined, and even revoked of the permit to drive for a company.

Arriving at the airport can be a stressful ordeal, with retrieving luggage and knowing where you are going, but not how. My first flight into McCarran, almost ten years ago was a confusing event for me. While cabs are always available for arriving flights, you have to look for the upper level entrance to the passenger pick-up. Most rides from here to a strip hotel should cost around $15- $25, depending on which casino/hotel your destination is. All drivers work for tips, just as do the bellmen, skycaps, and valet attendants. An enjoying conversation, in the cab can be worth a few extra dollars, to reward courteousness. If ever in a taxi and unaware of where you are being taken or given impolite service a complaint hotline is always open. Make sure you know the driver's company, cab number, and if possible take down the name on the permit along with the number when calling. As most cabs have activated cameras installed, each ride is recorded as documentation.

Planning travel arrangements is not always easy, but should be an enjoyed accommodation. When needing a cab in Las Vegas for a scheduled pick up, you call directly to any company listed below:
