Taking a Trip to Boston? See the Spectacular Spectacle Island!
Find Out Why This City Has More to Offer Than Tea Parties!
The city of Boston is also known for its Beach location named Spectacle Island. Spectacle Island sits on top of an 80 foot high mound of trash in Boston Harbor.
Spectacle Island has a swimming beach, walking trails and beautiful views of the Boston Harbor. It also sits on garbage.
Spectacle island is not only sitting on garbage, there is also 6 million tons of dirt and gravel residing over top of the garbage, inbetween the park and the garbage.
The project has taken place over a period of five years and has cost a total of $180 million.
The island is 105 acres and is now considered an oasis. It is only a 10 minute ferry ride from the city and stands out for its eco-friendliness. Although the island is compiled of garbage, it is solar powered and features a compost toilet system.
The garbage dump went from being an eyesore in the Boston Harbor to a beautiful tourist attraction. From garbage to green, Boston has turned its dump around and managed to bring tourists in because of it.
Spectacle Island offers a beautiful view of the city of Boston and also allows city dwellers to step outside the busy sidewalks and hit the nature trails. The Island is known as a getaway spot and sits 157 feet above sea level.
The beautiful view of the skyline is only one advantage of the island. Fishing, hiking, swimming and bird watching are all common activities for residents of Boston and others who choose to visit Spectacle Island.
The island is one of Boston Harbor's 34 islands. The name arrived because of the shape of the islands. The island was formerly known as a dump for the past 100 years. The growing dump eventually caused families who lived on the island to move away.
It is noted that the island would never have been known to be a landfill other than to residents themselves. Tourists won't notice a trace of pollution.
Overall, Spectacle Island is seen as a turn around and an aid in helping fight pollution, as well as make Boston a greener and more eco-friendly city.
Also, the island has a visitor center which is powered by solar panels and packed with exhibits and information about the island's history. This is a great educational place to visit and many educators are able to offer their students a fun and interesting field trip through the Island's facilities.
The visitor center on Spectacle Island also has articles that date back to the 1800s. Visitors are able to learn more about the island's old schoolhouse or layers of dirt.
During the summer, Spectacle Island also hosts jazz concerts every Sunday. There are also events organized by the park rangers themselves, such as kite flying, guided tours and scavenger hunts.
Bird watchers will enjoy a trip to Spectacle Island and will find bobolinks, warblers and savannah sparrows. There are also at least 97 other bird species that have been spotted in the park.
Fishermen have the opportunity to catch stripers, cod, flounder and lobster.
The visitor center also has a café which serves burgers and chowder, of course.
Spectacle Island is only one place to visit on your trip to Boston. The ferry rides are free and visitors can have the chance to step out of the city and gain a spectacular view of it at the same time.
Boston is also known for its beautiful University campuses and delicious seafood.
And of course, if you are making a trip to Boston, you will want to see the Red Sox play this season.
