Talk Radio Host Dr. Laura Schlessinger Uses N-Word and Later Issues Apology

Popular talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger repeatedly used the "N-word" to make a point on air during a call on her radio show earlier this week and has now issued an apology.

CNN.com reports that over 9 million Americans listen to Dr. Schlessinger every week.

Many of her listeners were outraged after hearing the conversation she had on Tuesday's show with an African-American woman who is in an interracial marriage and was asking for advice from the doctor on how to deal the issue of her husband not stepping up and putting a stop to certain comments from his friends in regard to race. (Listen to part of the segment at CNN.com.)

She and the caller had been squabbling over whether or not it was right for black comics to use the word on HBO and suggested that the caller was being hypersensitive.

Schlessinger went on to say that if the caller does not have a sense of humor, "...don't marry out of your race," according to reports from CNN.com.

During an interview with Anderson Cooper on "AC 360," Reverend Al Sharpton suggested that the comments about marrying out of one's race were "despicable," and that the logic Dr. Schlessinger used for saying the "N-word" did not excuse the affront.

During the apology, Dr. Schlessinger said that she tells her audience every day to do the right thing. She admitted her wrong doing saying that she "didn't intend to hurt people, but (she) did and that makes it the wrong thing to have done."

As an African American and listener of the Dr. Laura program, it's not her use of the N-word that really bothered me the most. I'm over that already. It was her blatant hypocricy in dealing with this caller. Over the years, I've heard Dr. Laura constantly admonish men to behave and act like men, take care of their families, and love and protect their wives. She has said that husbands should be a "hero" to their wives. Yet when a Black women caller calls in to Dr. Laura's show regarding how her White husband allows her to be disrespected in his presence, Dr. Laura goes off on some weird racial tangent involving Pres. Obama, Black voters, the n-word, her Black bodyguards, and actually attacks the caller for not having a sense of humor and being thin-skinned. Not a word is said about her wuss of a husband. which is totally out of the norm of her show. From her outburst and attack on the poor caller, it's obvious that Dr. Laura has some deep seated racial issues that she needs to deal

Isn't it funny, that on almost all occasions, all a majority person has to do when committing such an offense to a minority is "apologize." Except for Amus, it is standard practice, Say what you want, give a standard "I'm sorry" and do what you want and continue to march. This woman should not be on the public air, clear and simple.

I agree with Robert, very nicely put! I do feel the doctor was wrong in saying it, especially when the caller was not trying to be difficult, but to seek advice.

Lighten up Al, or don't say the word in private or public, if it is so wrong to say we black people should not say it, this will go a long way to convince others.

I hope the apology was heartfelt and not just caving in to public pressure. Dr. Laura is a treasure. No one is immune to mis-speaking but lets not hold people hostage over a word.

Black History Month (Don Imus now Dr. Laura?))

The cries of the weak and helpless are heard from the shore,
To a ship bound for the America’s under the master’s roar,
“Up the anchor, set all sails, let this profitable journey begin, ”
With a laugh, “you’re safety’s temporary, we’ll be back again.”

If today’s descendants of slavery had a small idea, if they only knew,
For freedom the daily struggles their ancestors had to go through,
There could never be a class to prepare or nothing you’d ever do,
Black kids would realize wearing pants below the butt, is not cool.

February’s the selected month celebrating what’s called Black History,
Why we only have one and not all twelve is an even bigger mystery,
Not that I’m in denial about the planting & harvest of Blacks as slaves,
But, is there really that much difference between now and yesterday?

And if there truly is then how come African Americans don’t rejoice,
    Exercising this freedom in th

Dr Laura why are you make an apology for the truth. Blacks negros, African Americans etc etc. In some cases think that is a term of endearment or acceptable when the N word is use between some African Americans. They get offended when white people call them the same word that they call themselves. Then comes the excuse that its ok because it spelled different. It all B.S. and you should have stuck to your guns. There was no need to apologize because the truth hurts someones feelings. Any person entering into a interacial relationship should be aware that lots of people are not going to like it. Many black men have lost their lives for just looking at a white woman. This N word stuff has gotten out of hand. Do we start saying the H world if we want to call white people honky, or the R word if we want to call someone a red neck. None of this racial foolishness should be used at all. I am African American this year, years before I was black, years before that I was negro, years before tha

She messed up, we all mess up every now and again. I will not throw stones at her, I've had my fair share bad days :) cheers

There is never, EVER a reason, rationale, or excuse that's acceptable for using the N-word or any other epithet in any conversation; to use it repeatedly on a radio talk show is beyond despicable. Dr. Laura should be immediately fired, or whatever they do to ignorant and racially insensitive radio talk show hosts these days...
