How to Get Off the Couch and Get Moving

Sandra Knasiak
You know you should exercise. You know how great it would make you feel. You know all of the benefits exercise has to offer. Yet, you don't do it. If you are having trouble finding the motivation to get up and move read the following tips for a little jump-start.

While you are lounging on the couch, find something on television that inspires you and makes you want to do get up and do something worthwhile. Be it an inspiring true story of someone who overcame tremendous odds, an episode of So, You Think You Can Dance or The Biggest Loser, turn it on soak up the motivational juices.

Splurge on flattering new workout gear. Fortunately, exercise apparel is not very expensive. So, select high quality items that fit and feel fabulous next to your skin. Make sure you have comfortable shoes that offer plenty of support. Incorporating energizing colors such as orange or red into your exercise attire can also help to help motivate you.

Be certain to have a play list of your favorite, stimulating tunes on hand. Play upbeat, motivating music that lifts your spirits and makes you want to move. Even better, turn it up and get your boogie on. Dancing is a fantastic form of exercise that can burn a ton of calories.

Remind yourself about how awful you will feel tomorrow when another day passed without exercising. Then, on the flip side, think about how awesome you will feel if you actually did work out like you kept saying you would. Remember how strong exercising makes you feel and how much energy it provides. Make a mental list of the numerous benefits that exercise has to offer: improved mood, increased energy, better and sounder sleep, better sex, increased level of confidence, etc. Exercise is also great for aiding in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and stress.

Enhance your mood by surrounding yourself with energizing and uplifting scents. Treat yourself with cinnamon or peppermint scented body wash. Lemon is also an uplifting, energizing aroma. Light a lemon scented candle to increase your mood.

Tell yourself that you only have to exercise for ten minutes. I even suggest using a timer. I find that I almost always end up exercising longer. After ten minutes, I am nice and warmed up so I want to continue. I know that if I think I have to exercise for thirty minutes, I am less likely to get up and do it. But, there is really no excuse to not exercise for only ten minutes.

If you don't want to exercise at least start eating healthier foods. When you nourish your body, something amazing happens. You naturally want to take care of your body. If you have the proper fuel to begin with, you will have the necessary energy to exercise. Smoothies are an excellent and tasty way to incorporate fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients into your diet. Add spinach, yogurt, whey protein, or peanut butter for an extra punch. Also, drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and ready for action. If water alone is too boring for you try adding a lemon, lime, or orange slice. Another idea for making your water taste better is to add a drop or two of vanilla or almond extract.

Regular exercise is necessary for a healthy body and mind. It isn't always easy to scrounge up enough motivation to work out but once you do, the rest is easy. The beauty about exercise is that it is addicting. Getting started is the hard part. Once you get going, your body wants to keep on going.
