The Tamil New Year starts when Sun enters into the Aries sign (Mesham Rasi). The new year 'Virodhi' starts on 14th April 2009. The Tamil population living in Tamil Nadu, in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other parts of the world celebrate the Tamil New year day festival. This day also being observed as the new year day by the people of:

The Hindu Tamil Calendar also follows the 'nirayan' or sidereal vernal equinox. The day marks the Sun's transition into nirayan Aries. Astrologically the event is termed as 'nirayan Mesha Samkranti.' The Tropical Vernal equinox occurs around 22nd March.
