1. Cost- How much will the membership cost you each year? Does it seem like a reasonable rate? Consider your finances during summer and Christmas. Do you have enough room in your budget?
2. Time- How much of your time can you spend at the gym? Are you a parent or working full-time? Will you be happy with the time left to spend with your family? Will you be leaving your dog home alone?
3. Gym Hours- Take a look at the hours the gym is open. Do the hours suit your schedule? Parents may like to work out in the evening, after their kids are in bed. Are you able to work out in the morning hours, before you leave for work? Consider the times you would like to go. Make sure the gym is open!
4. Childcare- Does your potential gym have a daycare centre? What ages of kids are allowed? Children under three may not be permitted. Will your spouse be around to help out? Finding childcare can be a hassle, especially when children are young. Would you be willing to hire a babysitter? The costs can start adding up!
5. Responsibilities- What other commitments have you already made? Do your kids play indoor sports? Are you on a committee? Did you join a bridge club? Make sure that you're not overbooking!
6. Support System- Will your family and friends support your decision? Will they encourage or hinder your efforts? A good support system can help you stay motivated. Can you find a work out buddy?
7. Gym location- Is the gym located in a convenient location? Is it by your home or office? Are you able to find transportation to the gym? Will the commute to your gym be a hassle?
8. Motivation- What is the reason you want to go? Is it a legitimate motivation? Are you a person with willpower who can stick to the plan? You will have to want to go!
9. Observers- Will it bother you to work out in a crowd? Are you self-conscious when others are watching? You really won't look your best at the gym. You'll be sweating with messy hair!
10. Hazards- Consider the reasons you might sign up and not go. Are your children frequently ill? Do you stay late at work on a regular basis? Will you go to the gym in the snow?
It's easy to work out at the gym for a month. Do you need to commit for a year? Are you able to pay for a trial plan? Don't pay for a gym you're not using. Working out at the gym is only one option. You can be active in many ways. Choose an exercise plan to suit your life. Consider all your options!
