Tammy's Ten: Tips for Taking Your Toddler to the Movies

Tammy White
Many parents find it difficult to take their toddler on an outing. They can be restless, distracting and noisy. Staying at home avoids the hassles of controlling them in public, but you also miss out on the fun. If you're a parent who loves the theater and would like to take your child, see my tips before buying those tickets.

1. Watch for signs. Look for cues that your child may be ready. Do they sit through a movie at home? If they are easily distracted or can't focus for long, they may not be ready to go. Children are unique and their attention spans differ. Don't take them before they are ready!

2. Choose your movie. Don't be in a hurry for your first trip to the theater. Wait until you find a good flick. Selecting a movie you know they will like helps ensure that they stay in their seat!

3. Pick your day. Does your theater have special viewings for babies? Do they have days with a discounted rate? Try to go on a day you don't think will be busy. It makes everyone's experience less stressful!

4. Select a time. The best time to take your child to the movies is a time they are normally calm. Going just before naptime or bedtime works well. It's fun to cuddle and watch!

5. Choose your seat. If you go with your spouse, sit your child in the middle. It helps to keep them contained. Choose a spot near the front and close to an aisle. You can leave for the bathroom quietly!

6. Don't go early. Kids get bored when they have to wait. Don't arrive at the theater early. Plan to go when the movie is scheduled to start. If you're late you will just miss the previews!

7. Go alone. The first time you take your child to the movies, don't go with a group of kids. You want your child to learn what behavior is expected. Lots of kids can be very distracting!

8. Wear them out. Before you take your child to the movies, make sure to wear them out. Play outside, run around or go to the park. Try your best to get those beans out!

9. Pack a bag. Fill a backpack with things from home. Bring a stuffed animal, sippy cup or wipes. A small blanket can keep your toddler comfortable. It's great for holding their popcorn too!

10. Pick your treats. Popcorn and water are great snack ideas. They're not sticky or full of sugar. Giving kids candy makes them hyper and silly. For the first outing, just keep it simple!

Taking your toddler to the movies is a challenging task, but can also be worth the effort. Select the right movie and choose a good time. Preparation makes all the difference. Good luck!
