Tanorexia : Addiction to Sun?

Chicadelsol
Is it possible to be addicted to the sun? Those who are continually tanning, even though they know it's bad for them, may be addicted to the sun much like others are addicted to alcohol, drugs, or gambling.

Why do so many men and women still tan despite being aware of the dangers? These "tanorexics" (slang term for people who obsessively tan), may have an addiction to the UV rays of tanning beds. Tanning increases endorphin production, (endorphins are chemicals released from the brain that produce euphoric feelings in the body) which can be addictive. Fellow tanners may even experience a "high", much like a drug addiction. It is noted that these individuals who repetitively expose themselves to ultraviolet light may in fact have a type of ultraviolet light substance-related disorder.

When our skin gets darker from tanning, it is actually a product of skin cell damage; the skin turns darker to protect itself. Tanners are literally damaging their cell's DNA, which could eventually lead to cancer.

Contrary to popular belief, using tanning beds is no safer than directly tanning in the sun, although many believe that tanning beds may be worse than the natural sun because they use UVA rays, which have been linked to deadly types of skin cancer such as melanoma.

On a lighter note, most tanners will agree that with the proper exposure to the sun you will gain Vitamin D. They will also agree that it is good for your nails, as well as how it seemingly wards off colds and illness, serving as a wellness factor if done in moderation. Tanning beds can offer some sources of Vitamin D, however, this can only occur if the tanning bed is adjusted properly, such that their ultraviolet filtering systems will enable the Vitamin D to filter through. Also, as with any exposure to the sun, the proper eye protection should be worn to avoid various types of corneal infections.

It has been said that the addiction becomes not a want, but a "need" to tanners who frequent the tanning beds. Some can skip a day or two without tanning but the need soon becomes a craving. If they feel their skin is beginning to pale, the feeling can be even more overwhelming. Noting that they have another dose of artificial rays in their system is enough to regain their confidence and brings a calming effect. It is also noted that those who tan do not compare themselves to others necessarily, more so that it is a personal boost (high) that they gain from frequenting the tanning beds.

Of course there are other ways to achieve the same bronzed look that so many crave, and this can be done through the means of self tanning lotions, spray on tans and various bronzing cosmetics will achieve the same bronzing affect.
