Tarot Reading: Pitfalls to Avoid

R. LaVoie
A Tarot reading is a great tool when you are making decisions, or trying to understand circumstances. But it is a mistake to make it the ONLY tool. For instance if you are trying to figure out what to do in a career choice, or a relationship, you need to consider to the logical aspects of the situation as well as getting a metaphysical perspective. Do the research on the company you are applying for, take a serious look at what is going on in the relationship. The tarot reading is meant to add meaning to the facts, not replace them. If the company your considering has a 90% turn over rate, or if your spouse is hitting you, you don't need a tarot reading to tell you it's a bad choice.

It is also easy to fall into the trap of seeing a tarot reading as a predictor of the future. It's easy to freak out if the cards show an unfavorable energy at work. Remember that the future is a result of the choices we make. The tarot may indicate that you are facing an obstacle, but YOU determine how those energies will affect you. A reading that shows trouble can actually be a great benefit, if you are able to proactively take action to avert catastrophe.

On the other hand a reading that is favorable does not guarantee smooth sailing. If you are working 12 hr days building a new business, and get a favorable reading, so you start letting things slide, you can still loose the business. The CARDS didn't create the positive energy; it was created by the hard work. The cards were merely reflecting your action.

On the extreme end of tarot abuse are the people who are just, not in touch with reality. Some things you just don't need to ask the cards. Should I have sex with a bi-sexual Haitian? Should I rob a bank? If I send that nice man in India $5000 to help him get his lottery money, will he really give me $60,000?

Another pitfall is falling under the control of an unscrupulous tarot reader. If you assign too much significance to readings, it is easy to be manipulated by the person who provides them. Even if you prefer to have someone else do your readings, you should develop an understanding of the cards yourself. It will help you get more out of your sessions and protect you from being mislead.

  • Tarot is not a substitute for reason.
  • Tarot is not meant to replace the decision making process, only to enhance it.
  • A bad choice is a bad choice, no matter what the cards say.
The Inquisition documented in considerable detail what the church regarded as evidence of heresy and the tarot is never mentioned.

One definitely needs to use caution when choosing a reader. Then a tarot reading can be a useful tool.
