Tasty and Healthy Snacks to Pack on Road Trips

Sunshine Red
With summer approaching fast it's time to think about taking the road trips with the family. This means being in the car for several hours maybe over several days with the kids while you get to your destination. With the price of fuel now, one way that you can cut back on expenses is to pack the snacks to eat on the trip. You want the snacks to be easy to eat, and not real salty so you won't be drinking a lot of water or soda and you're not stopping for bathroom breaks every hour like clockwork.

Some of the best snacks to take with you are easy finger foods to eat. Preparing them before you leave for your trip will make it easier for the kids to eat. It's next to impossible to make sandwhiches and cut fruits and vegetables up while on the road.

Fruits and Vegetable suggestions:

Fruits are great healthy snacks. You may want to pack bananas, grapes, raisins and apple slices. You won't really want to take oranges because they are too juicy allot of times and everyone will be sticky after eating them. For vegetables you can cut up celery , carrots, cucumbers and make them bite-size pieces then pick up the prepackaged ranch dressing dips or put the ranch dressing in small containers so that they can dip the bite-size pieces.

Cookies:

Animal crackers are great to take for the trip. Or you can make oatmeal cookies which are more nutritious then store bought cookies. No bake cookies are good to take, however sometimes they will crumble and cause a mess in the vehicle.

Small finger sandwiches:

When you make the sandwiches at home you can use your cookie cutter after you make the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cut out shapes. The kids love this. Or you can cut the sandwich into fourths so that it's not allotted of sandwich to hold in smaller hands.

Things you can buy already prepackaged that will travel well:

Jell-O and pudding containers, fruit roll-ups, granola bars, and individual packaged applesauce. Lunchables in the deli section is a good choice they can make their own snacks with these.

There are many options depending on what your family likes to eat. Pack the stuff in a small cooler to keep it fresh and cool. Don't forget to pack plenty of juice and water for everyone. To save room in the cooler you can freeze the water bottles and they will keep the rest of the stuff cold in the cooler. Kids love eating snacks as well as adults on long trips. Packing snacks will cut down on many stops along your journey.
